In the recent 10th grade entrance exam, the female valedictorian of the Literature class at Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted attracted attention with her 21-page Literature exam. The story became a controversial topic on social networks.
Besides the compliments and admiration for this female student, many people expressed opposing views. Some people also wondered " what do students learn from long, rambling, unrealistic essays that are shared as model essays? Writing long does not necessarily mean writing well" .
Ms. Dang Thi Thuy, a Literature teacher at Da Tri Tue High School ( Hanoi ), said that grading an essay is not only based on length but also on the quality of the work.
“Only students who are truly capable, have a solid grasp of knowledge, have a broad understanding, the ability to present fluently and write quickly can write 21 pages in 180 minutes. If they copy from models or learn by rote, they will never be able to achieve such a high score,” said Ms. Thuy.
The female teacher believes that the student in the above story wrote with all his mind and feelings, provided complete evidence and made convincing arguments.
However, Ms. Thuy noted that in reality, many students write long essays that end up being rambling and unclear. There are very long essays, but she cannot find the main points or ideas to grade them. On the contrary, some students write concisely and succinctly but with coherent connections and enough ideas, so they still meet the requirements of the assignment and get high scores.
A Literature teacher at a high school in Ha Tinh felt heartbroken when young students were hurt by offensive words on social media.
The length of an essay is not the deciding factor in a score. Long essays do not necessarily mean high scores, nor do teachers measure the length of an essay to grade it. For teachers, professional pride is always placed above all else.
According to her, students who are emotionally sublimated will write very imaginatively, sometimes when the words are pressed down on the pen, the ideas just flow out. Without knowledge and emotion, it is difficult to write long. To achieve a high score, the essay must solve the requirements given, at the same time have more creativity, expressing the writer's personal style. The quality of an essay can only be assessed based on its length or brevity online.
Master of Linguistics Nguyen Mong Tuyen stated his opinion: "There is a saying: Good writing is regardless of its length. With the same idea, the writer can develop it into a short text of only one sentence or a long text of thousands of sentences, both are reasonable. Language is the realm of thinking, and human thinking and mind are unlimited."
The 10th grade Literature exam does not require a word limit, so the length of the essay is up to the writer. Ms. Tuyen said that when she took the Literature exam, she could write 28 pages in 180 minutes. To do that, students must know how to synthesize knowledge from many sources, flexibly use argumentative operations, and at the same time have passion and mood to present the essay.
"I think that from now on we should be more open to accepting essays with different writing styles, lengths, meanings... instead of gossiping about them in a negative way," she advised.
