After three consecutive years of holding the top position in terms of admission scores at many universities, the Information Technology (IT) industry has begun to show signs of a slight "cooling down" in the 2024 admissions season. The shift of candidates to emerging technology industries along with the expansion of enrollment scale are said to be the main factors contributing to this trend.
Although maintaining high scores at prestigious universities, IT industry benchmarks have had slight downward adjustments in some training programs.

The North and the South recorded significant decreases in scores.
At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the leading school in the field of engineering and technology, the benchmark score for the Computer Science major in 2024 is 28.53 points, down 0.89 points compared to 2023. This is a notable decrease among the top schools. Other training programs in the IT industry of this school have never dropped below 27.25 points in the past three years, requiring candidates to achieve an average of 9.12 to 9.51 points/subject to have a chance of being admitted.
Similarly, the University of Technology - Vietnam National University , Hanoi also recorded a steady decrease in the standard score for the IT industry over the years: from 29.15 points in 2022, to 27.85 points in 2023 and continued to decrease by 0.05 points in 2024. Despite the decrease, the school's standard score is still maintained above 27.5 points, requiring candidates to achieve an average of 9.27 points/subject.
At the National Economics University, the IT benchmark score is "more comfortable" when it decreases from 27 points (on a scale of 30) in 2022 to 35.17 points (on a scale of 40) in 2024.
At universities in the South, the benchmark scores for the IT industry also showed slight fluctuations. The University of Information Technology - Ho Chi Minh City National University recorded a decrease in the benchmark score for the regular training program from 27.9 points (in 2022) to 26.9 points (in 2023), then a slight increase to 27.1 points (in 2024). The Vietnam - Japan IT industry (7480201_N) has a benchmark score 1-1.6 points lower than the main program.
The University of Science - Ho Chi Minh City National University also has a similar trend, when the Computer and Information Technology group (7480201_NN) decreased by 0.7 points to 26.5 points (in 2023), then increased to 26.75 points (in 2024).
Notably, the International University – Ho Chi Minh City National University has a sharp decrease in scores. The regular IT major here decreased from 27.5 points (in 2022) to 24 points (in 2024). Some other programs of the industry also maintained a stable score of 21 points, opening up opportunities for many good candidates to pursue.

Opportunities for candidates and reasons for cooling down
Although the IT benchmark at top schools is still competitive, requiring excellent candidates, there are still schools training in this field with more suitable entrance scores for many students with average scores, such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology, Van Lang, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Gia Dinh...
The "cooling down" of IT benchmarks is partly explained by the fact that many candidates have shifted to emerging majors such as Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cyber Security. These majors are usually trained at schools with strengths in IT, creating a dispersion of aspirations. In addition, the expansion of enrollment scale at schools also contributes to reducing competitive pressure.
In general, the IT industry still maintains its position as a "hot" industry and maintains its attractiveness thanks to the large demand for human resources and wide-open job opportunities in the labor market.
