Beauty contests have been a playground in Vietnam since the late 80s. Up to now, the most popular beauty contests include: Miss Vietnam, Miss Universe Vietnam, Miss Grand Vietnam, Miss World Vietnam...

More and more beauty contests are being held. Statistics show that from August 25, 2023 to August 31, 2023, there were 3 final nights of beauty contests held: Miss Ocean Vietnam (August 25, 2023), Miss Grand Vietnam (August 27, 2023), Mrs. Peace Vietnam 2023.

Thus, in less than a week, Vietnam has had 3 Misses and 12 Runners-up named. Specifically, Miss Ocean Vietnam honored Miss Tran Thi Thu Uyen and 4 Runners-up respectively: Lam Kieu Anh, Vu Duong Quynh Nhu, Vo Thi Tuyet Nhi and Thai Dao Truc Giang.

The Miss Grand Vietnam contest named the winner Le Hoang Phuong and 4 runners-up: Bui Khanh Linh, Truong Quy Minh Nhan, Le Thi Hong Hanh and Dang Hoang Tam Nhu.

Mrs. Peace Vietnam honored Miss Doan Thi Thu Hang, runners-up: Bui Thi Sao Mai, Hoang Hai Yen, Quach Thi Than, Nguyen Thi Minh Hue.

All beauty pageants affirm that their purpose is to honor beauty, support the community, and develop society... However, not many beauties crowned in these pageants leave their mark with meaningful activities. Instead, when mentioning some beauty pageants and related pageants, the public will immediately remember the unnecessary scandals.

Many people say that Vietnam is experiencing an "inflation" of beauty queens and runner-ups. Mr. Duong Xuan Nam - the "father" of the most prestigious beauty contest in Vietnam - Miss Vietnam - also shared: "Currently, we have two "chaos" related to beauty contests. The first is the chaos of the title of Miss and the second is the chaos of the contests".

He added: " The current chaos makes the title of Miss become cheap and disappointing for those interested in beauty pageants. In my opinion, we should end this situation by having stricter regulations on licensing Miss contests."

"It is not by chance that the public reacts and questions the true meaning of beauty pageants for society. Because of too many scandals related to beauty pageants, many beauties become beauty pageants but do not represent the beauty of Vietnamese women in terms of body, personality and soul," said Mr. Duong Xuan Nam.

Writer Nguyen Quang Thieu also shares the same opinion with Mr. Duong Xuan Nam: "The number of beauty pageants today is too much. The community, society, and even the authorities and management agencies clearly see that and feel it is unnecessary. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also assigns localities and provinces to manage beauty pageants."

He emphasized: "Currently, Vietnam is experiencing an inflation of beauty pageants. Beauty pageants are everywhere, the quality is too poor, even causing offense, so they need to be reduced. Because this is certainly not a factor stimulating social development."
