“The reading cultural space of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam” is located at Phuong Dinh building on Kim Chau hill, the project will be restored in 2022.
According to Dr. Le Xuan Kieu, Director of the Cultural and Scientific Center of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam, this place used to be a poetic space where Confucian scholars and students recited poems and poems. Organizing book readings at Phuong Dinh today not only restores old memories but also opens up a new direction for Ho Van, becoming a vibrant cultural space, closely connected with the inner temple area, creating a harmonious whole between heritage and contemporary life.
The special feature is that the design of the bookcases is inspired by the 82 doctoral steles in the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam relic.
Master Truong Quoc Toan, the designer of the "Literature Reading Space of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam" shared: "To me, the 82 doctoral steles are not only honorary golden plaques, but also like large books about the lives and wisdom of 1,304 doctors. Therefore, I designed the bookcases to resemble doctoral steles, so that when readers come here, they feel like they are pulling books out of the heart of a thousand-year-old stone steles."
This idea not only creates an aesthetic impression but also evokes contemplation: each stele, each doctor is a living book, continuing the eternal spirit of learning.

At the four corners of Phuong Dinh building and around the railing of Kim Chau hill, there are wooden chairs, benches and small stools, which can serve about 50 readers at the same time. This arrangement creates a sense of closeness and openness, helping readers easily choose a seat and immerse themselves in the peaceful atmosphere of Ho Van. In the ancient and quiet setting of the relic, readers can leisurely stop by the bookshelf, flip through pages about history, culture, literature, or simply find a quiet moment to contemplate.
Currently, the reading culture space here has gathered nearly 1,000 books provided by 8 publishing units and books circulated from the Hanoi Cultural Center - Library. Every year, the bookshelf will continue to be supplemented to meet the needs of readers.
The topics range from the history of Thang Long-Hanoi, the tradition of mandarin examinations, famous people, Confucianism to literature, art, life skills... In which, the "Thang Long Thousand Years of Culture Bookcase" series of Hanoi Publishing House is considered a highlight, each book is like a seed of knowledge sowing seeds for the present and the future.
"The reading cultural space of Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam" is free for all audiences.
Not only stopping at reading, “Reading Culture Space” is also associated with heritage experience activities. Dr. Le Xuan Kieu said: In the coming time, this place will organize many programs on Do paper, pottery, painting, etc. to create a creative cultural ecosystem. These activities not only enrich the experience for readers, but also help Ho Van become a unique, vibrant cultural destination, targeting the youth and creative community of the Capital.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, the presence of the reading space at Ho Van is like a peaceful moment, where knowledge meets heritage. Not only is it an open library, it promises to become a new cultural destination in Hanoi, contributing to continuing the thousand-year-old spirit of learning and arousing the love of books in the hearts of the public.
