Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 Iron and Steel Complex: Construction meets target

(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - The Hoa Phat Dung Quat 2 Iron and Steel Complex Project (Complex 2) was approved for investment in June 2021, with a total area of ​​279 hectares in Dung Quat Economic Zone. As of August 2024, this project has completed 80% of phase 1 and 50% of phase 2.

Complex 2 has a scale of 280 hectares, a total investment of 85 trillion VND, and a designed capacity of 5.6 million tons of high-quality hot-rolled coil (HRC) per year. According to the plan, phase 1 of the project will be put into operation in the first quarter of 2025. Phase 2 will be completed and put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2025. To ensure the project is implemented according to the plan, in the past, there have always been hundreds of contractors at the construction site of the complex, both constructing and installing equipment.

Director of Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Joint Stock Company Mai Van Ha said that the Complex 2 project has completed 80% of the progress of phase 1 and 50% of phase 2. Phase 1 is expected to complete the installation of HRC steel production line equipment by mid-September 2024, after which the company will conduct cold testing and equipment calibration. According to the current progress, phase 1 is expected to have the first hot test product by the end of 2024.

According to the design, the blast furnace volume of Complex 2 is 2,500m3, double the furnace volume of Complex 1, helping to reduce energy consumption. Hoa Phat also invests higher than current environmental standards, better meeting future requirements, especially in reducing CO2 emissions and reducing energy consumption.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hoa Phat Group Tran Dinh Long said that the project is the concretization of the group's strategy, focusing on the production of high-quality HRC steel, serving mechanical engineering, bringing Hoa Phat into a new stage of development. HRC steel products are the foundation and input materials for many high-tech manufacturing industries such as automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, household appliances, steel structures, galvanized iron, steel pipes, container shells, etc.

It is expected that after Complex 2 is completed (first quarter of 2025), Hoa Phat's crude steel production capacity will reach over 14.5 million tons per year, including 8.6 million tons of HRC steel, contributing to helping Vietnam's mechanical engineering industry become self-sufficient in raw materials in the domestic market and making Hoa Phat the leading HRC steel producer in Vietnam.

In 2020, Hoa Phat invested in the production of HRC steel on a modern continuous casting and rolling line at Complex 1. The technological line is provided by Danieli Group (Italy). Since its operation, engineers of Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel Joint Stock Company have completely mastered the production technology, creating many different product lines and high-quality steel grades, providing the market with a variety of HRC steel products. Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Complex also provides products with different widths and thicknesses according to customer needs. In mid-2023, Hoa Phat's HRC steel was granted CE Marking - a quality certification considered a "passport" when exporting to Europe.

Hoa Phat Group is currently the only Vietnamese enterprise that can produce HRC steel. On June 6, 2024, Hoa Phat reached the milestone of 10 million tons of HRC steel. This is an important milestone recognizing the efforts of Hoa Phat's engineers and staff after 4 years since the first HRC steel coil was born. With Primetal Group's modern HRC steel production line, Complex 2 will focus on developing high-quality HRC steel products, serving automobile steel production, low-carbon steel to produce products such as canned food shells, household appliances, steel structures, high-strength, weather-resistant container shells, etc.
