Five Vietnamese track and field athletes were found to have used doping at the 31st SEA Games. Of these, Quách Thị Lan and Khuất Phương Anh are not yet allowed to compete in the 2023 National Athletics Championships because their suspensions will not be completed until mid-November 2023. The remaining three athletes, Vũ Thị Ngọc Hà, Hoàng Thị Ngọc, and Lê Ngọc Phúc, had their suspensions completed on October 15th and are therefore allowed to compete. However, Ngọc Hà has retired from her athletic career, and Hoàng Thị Ngọc has transitioned to coaching, leaving only Lê Ngọc Phúc registered to compete. Ngọc is appearing at the competition as the coach of the Quảng Bình team.
Nguyen Thi Oanh has few worthy rivals at the national championship.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, head of the athletics department of the Department of Sports and Physical Education and concurrently General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation, stated that the Vietnam Center for Doping and Sports Medicine (the Center) will conduct doping tests at the 2023 National Athletics Championships. The method and number of samples will be decided by the Center, but will usually be random and focused on high-achieving athletes.
The 2023 National Athletics Championships featured a total of 50 events, including 24 men's, 24 women's, and 2 mixed events. The competition attracted nearly 500 athletes from 53 units nationwide. Among them were top Vietnamese athletics stars such as Nguyen Thi Oanh (Bac Giang), Nguyen Thi Huyen ( Nam Dinh ), Tran Thi Nhi Yen (Long An), and Luong Duc Phuoc (Dong Nai). The championship also aimed to discover more talent for the Vietnamese athletics team in preparation for international competitions. Le Ngoc Phuc remained a strong contender for the gold medal in the men's 400m event. Phuc has been training regularly and is in relatively good form.
