ANTD.VN - The mysterious beauty of the Northwest mountainous region of Vietnam is not only contained in terraced fields or Fansipan peak covered in white clouds. An Australian journalist - Zach Margolius, could not hide his admiration when writing about Hotel de la Coupole - MGallery Sa Pa, a place he called "Switzerland of the Vietnamese highlands".
Created by the extraordinary creativity of “resort king” Bill Bensley, Hotel de la Coupole – MGallery Sa Pa is not only a hotel, but also a work of art that blends the vibrant colors and patterns of the Northwest ethnic minorities with the beauty of French architecture in the 1920s and 1930s. This beauty has made the young Australian reporter – Zach Margolius receive many compliments in The West Australian – one of the leading newspapers in the land of kangaroos.
“Going from one surprise to another” is how Zach describes Hotel de la Coupole – MGallery Sa Pa. During his journey of experience, Zach was constantly amazed by every detail surrounding this “Western Europe in the heart of the Northwest” work of art. What makes Hotel de la Coupole even more special in the eyes of Zach Margolius is the unique combination of luxurious Western beauty and the characteristics of Vietnamese highland culture in every smallest detail inside the hotel.
Northwestern cultural details blend with Western European architecture to create a strange attraction. |
Hotel de la Coupole means “hotel of ceilings”, so each ceiling in this architectural masterpiece is designed very uniquely and meticulously. Right from the moment you step into the hotel lobby, the dome structure, luxurious baroque ceilings popular in ancient European castle designs, decorated with chandeliers inspired by the headdresses of the Red Dao people surprised the Australian reporter. Not only that, every visitor to Hotel de la Coupole is also invited to drink hot chocolate - a welcome drink that Zach said “no hotel in Vietnam is like that”.
“As we walked through the hallways, down the elevators, through the glass doors, every detail became more and more prominent,” Zach describes. Brightly colored yarn skeins were placed on shelves in different colors, most of them illuminated to emphasize their uniqueness. Above, the delicate silhouettes of runway models stood high above the arches—under even higher ceilings—adding a layer of glamour and playfulness.

The ancient European arches, combined with two main colors: classic French blue and yellow inspired by the golden rice fields - the typical beauty of the Northwest mountains - all create a luxurious, elegant but equally cozy space.
“Everything is perfectly in place, and nothing detracts from the hotel’s splendor and charm,” Zach wrote. The reporter felt like he was lost in the fashion capital of Paris – but a very interesting Paris mixed with the cultural values of the highlands of Vietnam. The leather boots were displayed as if they were part of an exhibition in the Louvre. With thousands of fashion drawings, antique trunks, bobbins, mannequins, sparkling dresses, fur coats, towering drawers filled with 500 giant spools of thread, the Australian reporter thought of the luxury shopping center Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
The window frames are evenly distributed throughout the hotel's layout, taking advantage of natural light sources to help fully view the Northwest mountains and forests and the hotel's garden from many different locations. "From the hotel room balcony, the view of the majestic mountains and the small town immersed in clouds makes me feel like I am being embraced in the magic of heaven and earth," Zach described. Although the architecture has a Western European style, the details imbued with the ethnic identity of the Northwest mountains and forests are not overwhelmed. On the contrary, thanks to the typical beauty of ethnic minority cultures such as the H'Mong and Red Dao, it has created an interesting contrast with the luxurious architecture of the hotel.

“If I were blindfolded and opened my eyes here, I would think I was lost in the middle of ski season in the Alps or at a posh country club in France,” the Australian reporter said, adding that with some rooms starting at $200 a night, Sapa’s gem is both more intimate and less expensive than European ski resort towns. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less impressive. On the contrary, every sensory experience he had here left an incomparable impression.
The Australian journalist concluded that this beauty is not only luxurious but also shows the respect for indigenous cultural values, creating an experience that is both novel and deeply historical. “This is a destination for those who love sophistication, love the beauty of ancient Indochina and want to immerse themselves in the breath of Vietnamese highland culture,” Zach commented that Hotel de la Coupole is a dream destination and a unique experience for all visitors.
