According to ATI, the town of Whittier (in Alaska) was first established by the US during World War II to support the US military in the war as well as to serve as a supply route for the Alaska Railroad. Whittier was built to cope with the weather of the area as well as the possibility of enemy attack. Photo: Wikimedia Commons. The town of Whittier is currently home to about 272 people, most of whom live in the 14-story Begich Towers. Photo: Wikimedia Commons. During the Cold War, the US Army built a fortified high-rise building for soldiers and their families to use as barracks. That was Begich Towers, a 14-story building that could withstand bombs and harsh weather. Photo: Wikimedia Commons. The military remained active in the area until 1960, when Whittier had a population of 1,200. After the soldiers left, some people remained in the town, and new residents moved in. Photo: Flickr. Although the population dropped significantly after Whittier was no longer controlled by the military, there are still about 272 people living there today, most of whom reside in Begich Towers.
