According to ATI, the town of Whittier (in Alaska) was first established by the US during World War II to support the US military in the war as well as to serve as a supply route for the Alaska Railroad. Whittier was built to cope with the weather of the area as well as the possibility of enemy attack. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.

The military remained active in the area until 1960, when Whittier had a population of 1,200. After the soldiers left, some people remained in the town, and new residents moved in. Photo: Flickr.
