Born in 2017 from a group of Stanford and Cambridge alumni, Synthesia is the new pride of the UK in the field of artificial intelligence. The company develops technology to create videos from text alone, allowing users to create virtual hosts speaking more than 50 languages without cameras or actors.
With more than 50,000 customers, including Microsoft, BBC and Reuters, Synthesia has become an AI unicorn worth more than $2.1 billion. According to CEO Victor Riparbelli, the platform helps businesses save more than 30 million hours of editing time and reduce video production costs by 70%.
However, the company is still losing more than £23m due to research costs and cloud computing infrastructure. Experts say Synthesia is a “test” of Britain’s ability to maintain a competitive position against the US and China in the AI race. Alongside the opportunity, the company's AI video technology also raises ethical concerns and the potential for it to be used to create deepfakes.
CEO Victor Riparbelli claims Synthesia aims for “responsible AI”, saving millions of hours of work and putting the UK back on the world technology map. Dear readers, please watch more videos: AI Trash Cleaning | Hanoi 18:00
