Parasites cause persistent eye pain, eye drops do not help
The Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases said it had just received and treated a 53-year-old female patient from Ha Nam who came to the clinic with persistent eye pain, accompanied by a gritty feeling, continuous tearing and tingling.

After being discovered, a 10 cm long parasite was removed from the patient's eye. The specimen is currently being analyzed at the parasitology laboratory for identification and further analysis. Results on the parasite species will be available in about 2-3 days.
The patient said that before coming to the clinic, he had used eye drops at home but the irritation, itching and pain did not improve.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen (Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases), if the above case is not detected and treated promptly, the parasite can cause prolonged infection, corneal damage, impaired vision, and even blindness.
Dr. Huyen also noted that parasites not only cause diseases in the digestive tract but can also invade important organs such as the eyes, brain, lungs, liver, or heart and cause serious complications if not detected early.
More worryingly, parasites can exist silently in the body for months, even years, without showing obvious symptoms.
Some common initial symptoms of parasitic infection are unexplained persistent abdominal pain, digestive disorders, recurring allergies, rashes all over the body, rapid weight loss or unusual eye symptoms such as redness, itching, frequent watering, which can be easily overlooked.
