According to the expedition company AGA Adventures, Oliver Foran (27 years old) reached the summit of the icy Everest, 8,849m high, on May 20th, shattering the previous record of 67 days set by South Korean climber Kim Chang Ho in 2013.
Kim Chang Ho walked and then kayaked on the Ganges River, then cycled to Nepal before climbing to the base camp in 2013.
Meanwhile, Foran's extraordinary journey began in early April on the coast of the Bay of Bengal in India. He cycled over 1,150km to Nepal, then trekked to the Everest base camp before conquering the "roof of the world ".
In a video posted on his personal Instagram account from the summit of Mount Everest, Foran emotionally said: "We just made history. I'm completely exhausted."
Beyond aiming for a record, Foran also undertook the challenge to raise funds for building a mental health support center for young Australians – a theme closely tied to his personal story. He experienced a crisis in his teenage years after his mother died of brain cancer. To date, the campaign he is running in partnership with Youturn has raised over $57,000.
Conquering the summit of Mount Everest from the sea is an extremely rare feat in the world of extreme mountaineering. The first person to complete this journey was also an Australian – Tim Macartney-Snape – in 1990, taking nearly three months. It was the documentary about Macartney-Snape's trip that inspired Oliver Foran to undertake this historic journey.
