On February 19th, the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee announced that it had issued a decision to allocate an additional 100 hectares of land in Bao Lam district to the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (TKV) for bauxite mining.
Mining activities are taking place at the Tan Rai bauxite-aluminum complex project, implemented by Lam Dong Aluminum Company. The land allocation price for the project is set at 562,400 VND/ m² .
The land use rights extend until September 20, 2039, under the form of a state-owned land lease with annual payments for mineral exploitation activities.
The Tan Rai bauxite-aluminum complex is managed by Lam Dong Aluminum Company. The complex officially started operations in September 2012, with an expected alumina production capacity of 600,000 tons per year.
However, the complex's current capacity has exceeded its design, with the equivalent alumina production in 2024 reaching 710,000 tons, equivalent to 109.2% of the plan.
The Tan Rai bauxite-aluminum complex contributes 300-500 billion VND/year to the budget, accounting for over 30% of industrial production value and nearly 40% of export turnover of Lam Dong province.
Previously, Lam Dong Aluminum Company was approved to reclaim 428.22 hectares for bauxite mining. As of early 2024, only 73.3 hectares had been approved for compensation, but only about 40 hectares were available for mining due to their concentrated location. The remaining area is scattered and lacks access roads.
