Spreading Ho Chi Minh's legacy in Brazil

On the occasion of the 136th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2026) and the 37th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Brazil (May 8, 1989 - May 8, 2026), the Vietnamese Embassy in Brazil, in coordination with the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association (ABRAVIET) and the local authorities, organized numerous activities to commemorate and honor the life, career, and ideological legacy of President Ho Chi Minh, thereby contributing to strengthening people-to-people exchanges and deepening the friendship between the two countries.

Laying wreaths in commemoration of President Ho Chi Minh in Rio de Janeiro.

The series of activities began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial site honoring President Ho Chi Minh in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro state (Brazil). The event was organized by the Vietnamese Embassy in Brazil in coordination with the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association and the Honorary Consulate of Vietnam in Rio de Janeiro state (Brazil).

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the ceremony was attended by the Honorary Consul of Vietnam in Rio de Janeiro state, Ms. Marcelle Torres; the Secretary General of the Brazil-Vietnam Friendship Association, Mr. Pedro de Oliveira; representatives of the Rio de Janeiro state government; representatives of the leadership of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCdoB); a large number of Brazilian friends who admire President Ho Chi Minh and Vietnam, and representatives of the Vietnamese community living in Rio de Janeiro state.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Brazil Bui Van Nghi affirmed that the great victories of the Vietnamese nation are all linked to the immense contributions of President Ho Chi Minh, and emphasized that his forward-thinking ideology and vision laid the first foundation for the friendship and cooperation between the people of Vietnam and Brazil more than a century ago.

The ambassador recalled the historic milestone of 1912, when the patriotic young man Nguyen Tat Thanh stopped in Rio de Janeiro on his journey to find a way to save the country. From his practical experiences in Brazil and many other countries, his revolutionary ideology of national liberation, the spirit of solidarity, and his broad international vision gradually took shape, becoming a source of inspiration for movements fighting for national independence and social progress around the world , especially in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The Ambassador highly appreciated the Rio de Janeiro state government's preservation of the memorial honoring President Ho Chi Minh, demonstrating the friendly relations and special bond between the people of Vietnam and Brazil. He also expressed his hope that both sides would continue to promote cooperation initiatives in culture, education , and history, as well as organize more activities honoring President Ho Chi Minh, thereby contributing to strengthening understanding, solidarity, and close ties between the people of the two countries.

At the event, delegates respectfully laid wreaths, commemorating and expressing profound gratitude for the contributions of President Ho Chi Minh. On this occasion, delegates from both countries had a chance to exchange stories about President Ho Chi Minh and discuss the book "Ho Chi Minh - The Life and Career of the Leader of Vietnam's National Liberation" by journalist and historian Pedro de Oliveira.

Promoting Vietnam-Brazil cooperation

Also during his visit and working trip to Rio de Janeiro state, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi and the delegation from the Embassy attended a seminar on the theme "Brazil - Vietnam: Dialogue on Ho Chi Minh's Legacy" organized by the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Council (ALERJ), attracting nearly 70 delegates including legislators, government representatives, academics, lecturers, students and businesses from Brazil.

At the seminar, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi shared insights into the life, career, and ideology of President Ho Chi Minh; emphasizing the enduring values ​​of national independence, peace, international solidarity, and human development that he left behind, which are not only significant for Vietnam but also deeply meaningful for peace-loving nations around the world.

Brazilian speakers at the seminar expressed deep respect and admiration for the life, career, and ideology of President Ho Chi Minh, considering him a quintessential symbol of the aspiration for national independence, social justice, and international solidarity. They emphasized that President Ho Chi Minh's intellectual legacy continues to inspire progressive movements worldwide and contributes to efforts toward peace, dialogue, and sustainable development.

Brazilian scholars also highly appreciate Vietnam's current development achievements, considering them as proof of the enduring value of Ho Chi Minh's thought on national self-determination, cooperation among developing countries, and enhancing understanding among nations.

On this occasion, Ambassador Bui Van Nghi held working meetings with representatives of the Rio de Janeiro city government, several universities and educational institutions to promote initiatives honoring President Ho Chi Minh and promoting the image of Vietnam in Brazil, as well as to discuss potential cooperation in the fields of economics, trade, science and technology, education and training.

Ambassador Bui Van Nghi proposed that Brazil consider naming streets or public buildings after President Ho Chi Minh, and also establish "Vietnam Studies Centers" and "Ho Chi Minh Research Centers" at several universities, libraries, and cultural spaces to more widely introduce to the Brazilian public the history, culture, country, and people of Vietnam, as well as the life and ideology of President Ho Chi Minh.

The series of activities in Brazil commemorating the 136th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birth is expected to further spread his image, ideology, and humanistic values ​​in this South American country, while contributing to promoting people-to-people exchanges, enhancing mutual understanding, and deepening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Brazil.
