Recently, the German Club of the Diplomatic Academy organized a program to spread the love of language and literature to students of the Diplomatic Academy in particular and the student community in general.
The program received the attention and participation of Dr. Hans-Peter Glanzer - Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam; Dr. Thomas Gass - Swiss Ambassador to Vietnam; Mr. Simon Kreye - Deputy Ambassador, Head of Economic Department of the German Embassy in Vietnam; Ms. Vu Thi Thu Phuong - Program Manager, Representative of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Foundation (KAS);
Dr. Le Viet Thai - Vice President of the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Association; Dr. Ngo Tu Lap - Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute for Research and Development of Culture, Language and Education, former Director of the International Francophone Institute (IFI); Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of The World and Vietnam Newspaper; and representatives from the Poetry Translation Club of the Hanoi Writers Association, the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and the University of Foreign Languages - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Taking place with two main parts (introducing the German Club of the Diplomatic Academy and the discussion "Translation stories - Journey of language exchange"), the program also had the participation of Deputy Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies of Diplomatic Academy, Tran Chi Trung, Head of the Training Department of the Diplomatic Academy; Ms. Nguyen Thi Thin and Acting Head of the Training Department of the Diplomatic Academy, Hoang Mai Huong, along with many students inside and outside the Academy.
The German Club of the Diplomatic Academy (GOD) is a young club, established in March 2023 with advisor Chu Thu Phuong, translator (Member of the Vietnam Writers Association, former Member of the Literature Translation Council of the Vietnam Writers Association).
GOD's mission is to help members improve their German language skills; learn about the culture and life of German-speaking countries; practice interpreting, translating, translating literature, writing books and creating reference materials for German departments of schools in Vietnam.
To achieve the above goal, right from the time of its establishment, GOD members organized a German book translation project called Komm, sagte die Katze - a children's book by Austrian author Mira Lobe.
Mira Lobe is one of the world's most famous German-language children's authors. The book has won two prestigious awards: the Vienna City Prize for Children's and Youth Literature 1975 and was included in the Honorable Mention for the Austrian National Prize for Children's and Youth Literature 1975.
The Komm, sagte die Katze project involves more than just translating a book, such as drama practice and performing arts.
Through the project, GOD members not only learn grammar, translation skills, and drafting skills, but also learn effective teamwork skills, communication skills, explore acting and singing abilities, and learn about the process and methods to be able to completely translate a book.
Coming to the program, Dr. Hans-Peter Glanzer shared: “We are in a globalized world and increasingly connected through social media, as well as facing increasing linguistic assimilation.
Linguistic diversity and especially the influence of different languages on specific cultural/regional areas of each language are at risk of being gradually lost.
The value of language is much greater than its mere function of communication. Knowledge of language makes it easier for us to access other cultures both experientially and psychologically. It also enables people from different cultural backgrounds to understand and empathize with each other.
Therefore, GOD's decision to promote literary translation as one of its key activities is very consistent with the above trend."
In the second part of the program, there was a discussion called “Translation Stories – The Journey of Language Interference”, where students who love literature and language were able to directly listen to speakers with many years of experience in the field of translation share about their career and the journey of language interference.
They are translator Ha Pham Phu - Member of the Vietnam Writers Association, former Chairman of the Literature Translation Council of the Vietnam Writers Association and translator Chu Thu Phuong - Member of the Vietnam Writers Association, former Member of the Literature Translation Council of Hanoi.
At the same time, this is also an opportunity for students to discuss and ask questions to answer concerns about literary translation directly with translators.
The program was a great success and received a lot of attention from embassies, agencies, units of German-speaking countries, teachers of the Diplomatic Academy and students with a passion for literature and language, especially German.
