Van Phuc Silk Village (Ha Dong, Hanoi ) has a thousand-year-old tradition of silk production, once considered a "treasure" offered to the emperor. The entire process, from silkworm breeding and spinning to dyeing and drying, is now only found in a few households with weaving machines; the remaining stages of production are carried out elsewhere. This is partly due to limited land and a large population, leaving insufficient space for mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, and silk spinning.
Meanwhile, the silk reeling factories in Bao Loc ( Lam Dong province ), equipped with modern machinery and serving the export market, produce silk of very consistent quality. After importing silk from Bao Loc, some households in Van Phuc village weave it into silk fabric, then transport it to Ha Nam for dyeing and drying. Many families even import finished fabrics from various sources, simply cutting and sewing them for sale to consumers. Therefore, Van Phuc today resembles a bustling town, primarily focused on direct business, with very few remaining production facilities, weaving machines, or dyeing workshops.
However, aware of the importance of preserving traditional crafts, right at the entrance to the village, there is an exhibition area dedicated to silk weaving for visitors, featuring an antique weaving machine and a simulation of the silk weaving process. Interestingly, most businesses in Van Phuc, from artisans to small traders, are very enthusiastic and friendly to customers. It's not just about buying and selling products; sometimes, simply chatting about silk weaving and admiring the rich and diverse products made from Ha Dong silk is enough to warm the heart and instill confidence in a traditional product that still holds much value in today's modern life.
