The San Diu Ethnic Cultural Village in Binh Dan commune, recently inaugurated, has become a unique community space and cultural destination in Van Don district, Quang Ninh province. With 86% of its population being San Diu people, the locality still preserves many unique traditional cultural features, from cuisine and clothing to Soong Co singing art, the Dai Phan festival, and wedding and ancestral worship rituals.
The San Diu community cultural center is a prominent highlight among these cultural spaces. Local people like Ms. Tu Thi Sinh have the opportunity to directly participate in performances and tell cultural stories to tourists, contributing to the preservation of knowledge and traditions in a natural and sustainable way.
"For me and the people here, we are very happy and proud to have the State invest in such a large and modern project. I want to spread the word and introduce the Soọng Cô folk songs, traditional costumes, and wedding rituals of the Sán Dìu people. The people still preserve their farming tools; and the Soọng Cô songs are still sung in their daily lives," said Ms. Từ Thị Sinh.
In order to preserve and promote the cultural values of ethnic minority communities, the San Diu Ethnic Culture and Tourism Village in Voong Tre hamlet was invested in and built as part of Plan No. 161/KH-UBND dated June 21, 2023, of the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee on "Pilot construction, preservation and promotion of cultural identity values of 4 ethnic minority villages associated with community tourism development in the mountainous area of Quang Ninh province, 2023-2025". This preservation not only focuses on safeguarding heritage but also helps the younger generation better understand their origins and ethnic identity, fostering pride; contributing to raising the sense of responsibility of each citizen and the community.
Mr. To Van Luu, Secretary and Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Dan commune, said that in order for the Cultural Village to become a typical destination of the locality, the district has worked with travel agencies to introduce and develop tour routes to serve tourists: "The district has a policy of developing community tourism in the area, linked with the district's tours. The locality is also continuing to promote the traditional San Diu houses by building regulations on operation associated with community tourism in households."
The development of cultural villages as tourism products reflects Quang Ninh's long-term vision for cultural preservation and is expected to alleviate pressure on central tourist destinations such as Ha Long and Yen Tu, while simultaneously boosting the local economy and increasing income for ethnic minority communities.
