This is one of 234 projects nationwide that have been started, inaugurated, and opened for technical traffic with a total investment of over 3.4 trillion VND, in celebration of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the 79th anniversary of the National Resistance Day (December 19, 1946 - December 19, 2025).

Representing Lang Son province were: Mr. Nguyen Canh Toan, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Ms. Doan Thu Ha, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairwoman of the Provincial Fatherland Front Committee; Mr. Ho Tien Thieu, former Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and former Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; members of the Provincial Party Standing Committee; leaders of the Provincial People's Council and People's Committee; leaders of departments, agencies, communes and wards where the project passes through; and investors and project enterprises.

The Huu Nghi Border Gate - Chi Lang Expressway project is the first segment of the Eastern North-South Expressway, spanning nearly 60 km and passing through 7 communes and wards in Lang Son province. The project has a total investment of over 11,000 billion VND and commenced construction on April 21, 2024, with the entire route expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Overcoming challenges such as severe natural disasters, difficult mountainous terrain, and complex geology, nearly 3,000 officials, engineers, and workers persevered on hundreds of construction sites to build bridges and open roads, working in "three shifts and four teams" to accelerate the project's progress.
By December 19, 2025, the project had completed its target of 50 km of highway, including 37/43 km of the main route from Huu Nghi Border Gate to Chi Lang and 13/16 km of the branch routes connecting Tan Thanh and Coc Nam border gates. The completion of this project contributes to the nationwide goal of building 3,000 km of highways by 2025, ensuring seamless connectivity from Cao Bang province to Ca Mau province.
Upon completion, the Huu Nghi - Chi Lang expressway will connect with the Dong Dang (Lang Son) - Tra Linh (Cao Bang) expressway and the Bac Giang - Lang Son expressway, helping to minimize accidents and congestion on National Highway 1, creating a strategic transportation corridor connecting the Northeast region, facilitating cross-border goods circulation, and promoting border trade economic development.
