VHO - May 28th marks many noteworthy events in Vietnamese and world history. Most notably, the conferment of the title of General on Comrade Vo Nguyen Giap in 1948 in the Viet Bac war zone. Alongside these are events related to the workers' movement, the building of national unity, the preservation of cultural heritage, and outstanding scientific and social achievements.

On May 28, 1948, in the Viet Bac war zone, President Ho Chi Minh, on behalf of the Government, conferred the rank of General on Comrade Vo Nguyen Giap. This was the first time the Vietnam People's Army had a General, marking a significant step forward for the revolutionary army after the August Revolution.

The ceremony was simple but solemn. President Ho Chi Minh instructed the General to "command and lead troops to fulfill the mission entrusted to him by the nation."

On this occasion, many key military officers were also promoted to the rank of general, such as Nguyen Binh, Van Tien Dung, Hoang Van Thai, etc. This event holds special significance in the history of building the revolutionary armed forces of Vietnam.

The Avia factory workers' strike

On May 28, 1929, more than 200 workers at the Avia automobile repair factory in Hanoi went on strike under the leadership of Comrade Ngo Gia Tu and the factory's labor union. The workers demanded higher wages, an end to beatings, and no dismissal of those participating in the struggle.

The strike quickly gained support from workers in many factories in Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Nam Dinh, along with the backing of local farmers.

By June 10, 1929, the struggle had triumphed. This is considered one of the most representative movements of the Vietnamese working class before the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam, demonstrating a spirit of solidarity and an increasingly clear fighting spirit.

Establishment of the Vietnam National Union

On May 28, 1946, at the initiative of President Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnam National Union (Lien Viet) was established to expand national unity.

The Viet Lien brought together patriotic organizations, parties, and intellectuals who had not yet joined the Viet Minh, including the Vietnam Socialist Party and the Vietnam Women's Union. The establishment of the Viet Lien contributed to consolidating political strength and strengthening national unity in the early stages of building and defending the revolutionary government.

Later, Lien Viet merged with Viet Minh, becoming the predecessor of the current Vietnam Fatherland Front.

Establish the Vietnam Military History Institute

On May 28, 1981, the Vietnam Military History Institute was established, marking a significant development in the field of military history research in our country.

Since its inception, the Institute has focused on summarizing the war, researching Vietnamese military art, and compiling the history of the resistance wars. Numerous research projects, military history books, and documents on major battles have been produced, serving both traditional education and scientific research.

The institute also serves as a postgraduate training center for military history, contributing to the development of a team of highly specialized researchers within the military and social science institutions.

"Mo Muong Hoa Binh" is sponsored.

On May 28, 2015, the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations granted patronage to Mo Muong - a unique cultural heritage of the Muong people.

Mo Muong reflects the worldview and philosophy of the Muong people and is used in many life cycle rituals such as weddings, funerals, and prayers for peace… This heritage has been passed down through many generations in the form of oral tradition.

In 2016, Mo Muong was included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Preserving and promoting the value of Mo Muong is now considered an important task in safeguarding the ethnic cultural identity in modern life.

The temples, pagodas, and communal houses dedicated to the Two Trung Sisters have been classified as a Special National Monument.

On May 28, 2020, Hanoi held a ceremony to receive the Certificate of Ranking as a Special National Monument for the Hai Ba Trung temple-pagoda-communal house complex in Hai Ba Trung district.

The complex of historical relics includes the Hai Ba Trung Temple, Vien Minh Pagoda, and Dong Nhan Communal House, preserving many valuable artifacts from the Le and Nguyen dynasties along with a unique architectural system. This is a religious space associated with the uprising of the Hai Ba Trung sisters - a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the nation.

Being classified as a Special National Monument contributes to affirming the historical and cultural value of the monument complex, while also creating favorable conditions for the preservation and promotion of heritage values ​​associated with cultural tourism in the Capital.

Hubble captures image of exoplanet.

On May 28, 1998, NASA announced that the Hubble Space Telescope had captured the first image of an exoplanet, located approximately 450 light-years from Earth.

Previously, astronomers primarily discovered exoplanets through inferences about their gravitational influence on other celestial bodies. Hubble's achievement marks a significant advance in the field of cosmic observation and the study of planetary system formation.

This discovery is considered a significant milestone in astronomy at the end of the 20th century, contributing to the advancement of programs to search for extraterrestrial life and further research into the universe.

Restoring the masterpiece "The Last Supper"

On May 28, 1999, after 21 years of restoration, Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, The Last Supper, was put back on display in Milan, Italy.

The painting, created in the late 15th century on the wall of the Santa Maria delle Grazie monastery, had severely deteriorated due to time, war, and the environment. The restoration project, which began in 1978, is considered one of the world's largest and most controversial art conservation projects.

The reopening of the artwork has attracted widespread attention from the international art community, while also highlighting the importance of preserving the heritage of human painting against the threat of damage over time.
