The Ministry of Education and Training has just issued the 2025-2026 school year time plan framework for preschool education, general education and continuing education applied nationwide.
According to the Ministry's plan, the opening ceremony will still be held on September 5 as every year.
Students in grades 1, 9 and 12 can return to school two weeks earlier than the opening day, which is August 22 (in previous years, this regulation only applied to first graders). The remaining grades can return one week earlier, which is August 29.
The Ministry’s school year framework applies to public schools. Private schools can start school four weeks earlier. Therefore, since the beginning of August, many private schools have welcomed students back and started teaching the official curriculum.

In the new school year, public schools will organize the earliest school opening on August 22 for grades 1, 9, 12 and the remaining grades on August 29.
In the new school year, semester I will end before January 18, 2026, semester II before May 31, 2026, similar to previous years.
Schools must consider recognizing completion of primary school and secondary school graduation before June 30, 2026; complete primary school enrollment before July 31, 2026.
Notably, the 2026 high school graduation exam is scheduled to take place on June 11-12, two weeks earlier than this year.
Regarding the principles of building the school year schedule for localities, the Ministry requires that the school year schedule must ensure 35 weeks of actual study (semester I has 18 weeks, semester II has 17 weeks).
Other national exams are organized according to the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training. Holidays and Tet holidays are implemented according to the regulations of the Labor Code and annual instructions.
Teachers' annual leave is taken during the summer break or can be arranged alternately at other times of the year to suit the specific characteristics and school year schedule of the locality.
In case of natural disasters or severe weather, the Director of the Department of Education and Training decides to let students take time off and arrange make-up classes, ensuring teachers' time off during the school year.
The Ministry of Education and Training noted that the school year schedule needs to ensure consistency for all levels of education in a residential area, especially in general schools with many levels of education.
