The summer of 2025 is witnessing an unprecedented transfer "arms race" in Premier League history. The "Big Six" group alone, including Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United and Tottenham, has spent more than £1 billion.
Defending champions Liverpool broke the bank, spending a total of £269 million to bring in a series of stars, notably Florian Wirtz (from Leverkusen) for a fee of £116 million - a new record in England, and French striker Hugo Ekitike for £69 million. "The Kop" also recruited left-back Milos Kerkez (£40.8 million) and right-back Jeremie Frimpong (nearly £35 million).
Florian Wirtz, the Premier League's blockbuster signing this season
This is a huge step up from last season, when they only brought in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and striker Federico Chiesa for a total fee of less than £40m.
Success in the 2024-2025 season will help Liverpool earn a large sum of money from the Premier League title, plus a surge in revenue from the renovation and expansion of Anfield, a new shirt sponsorship deal with Adidas and an expanded Champions League place.
According to financial expert Kieran Maguire, Liverpool's revenue this season could exceed £700m - enough for them to continue splashing the cash if they want to recruit Alexander Isak from Newcastle for more than £130m.
Chelsea were the second biggest spenders with £212m, mainly on three names: Joao Pedro from Brighton (£60m), Jamie Gittens from Dortmund (£56m) and young striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town (£30m).
Joao Pedro is an expected factor at Chelsea
Arsenal, after three consecutive runners-up seasons, spent £137 million and are preparing to sign Victor Gyokeres from Sporting for £63.5 million, taking their total spending past £200 million. Man City quickly "closed the book" on the transfer with around £127 million, recruiting Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki.
Meanwhile, Man United – after a disastrous season with a final position of 15th – also spent 133.5 million pounds, mainly to buy Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Tottenham, although ranked 17th, with the Europa League title, they won the right to participate in the Champions League under new coach Thomas Frank and approved spending 122.5 million pounds on new players Mohammed Kudus (55 million pounds), Mathys Tel (30 million pounds) ...
English clubs spend big on transfer market
Notably, the three new teams, Sunderland, Burnley and Leeds, are all in the top 10 spending clubs. Sunderland spent more than £100 million to bring in 6 new players, while Burnley and Leeds spent nearly £70 million and £60 million respectively.
Only Fulham have not spent a penny. Crystal Palace have only made one £2m signing from Ajax. Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest – despite their European places – have also done some small business.
The growing financial disparity raises questions about the competitiveness of the Premier League. Despite Forest and Bournemouth qualifying for the Champions League at times last season, they ended up finishing seventh and ninth respectively – with the big boys back in their usual places.
As the "Big Six" continue to spend lavishly, fairy tales in the Premier League are becoming increasingly difficult to come by.
