Liverpool are in excellent form going into this match, with a run of four wins in all competitions. Just a few days ago, they thrashed West Ham 5-2.
Conversely, Wolverhampton has also been showing strong form recently. They convincingly defeated Aston Villa in the previous round, and drew with Arsenal two rounds before that.
Liverpool faced some difficulties in this match as three key players – Salah, Ekitz, and Konate – were observing the Ramadan fasting month. All three started the game.
According to Islamic law, fasting during Ramadan involves abstaining from food and drink during sunrise. The match started around 8 pm in England, after sunset, meaning stars like Salah had already replenished their energy.
Nevertheless, fatigue was evident in the legs of all three players. Conversely, Wolverhampton, while having many players of color, had virtually no Muslim players.
Liverpool played one of their most lackluster matches of the season. Throughout the first half, Liverpool created virtually no clear-cut chances.
Salah, as always, failed to make any impact, while the young stars Szoboszlai, Ekitike, and Gakpo also lacked energy. Liverpool had more possession and constantly pressed, but without much success.
That lack of effectiveness cost Liverpool dearly in the 78th minute. The attack was very simple, with a long ball from the home team being successfully converted by Gomes, thereby opening the scoring for Wolverhampton.
In the 83rd minute, Salah unexpectedly received a gift from the opponent – a careless back pass, creating an opportunity for the "Egyptian king" to break through and score the equalizer.
But luck was still not on Liverpool's side. In the 90+3 minute, Andre Gomes stole the ball in midfield and unleashed a shot that deflected off Gomez's leg and into the net, leaving Alisson helpless.
This lucky goal secured a 2-1 victory for Wolverhampton over Liverpool, creating a major upset in the 29th round of the Premier League.
With this result, Wolverhampton now have 16 points, narrowing the gap to the relegation zone to 11 points. Meanwhile, Liverpool remain in fifth place with 48 points.
