Google Play error not showing system app updates

This has led to confusion as Google Play says an update is available, but when you actually check, there is no item to install. This issue has been reported since June and continues to affect many important system apps.

Developments and updates

January 7: Google Data Restore Tool, an app that helps restore data from old phones, has a similar issue. The app doesn't show up in the "Installed" list and can only be updated via a direct link from the Play Store.

June 2: This issue was first reported. System app updates were not showing up on the “Downloading” screen, although other apps were updating normally. Users had to go to the specific app list in the Play Store to update manually.

July 11: Google Partner Setup, an app required for devices running Google Mobile Services (GMS), also had issues with not showing updates. While the app is essential for keeping Android devices running properly, users still had to go directly to the Play Store listing to update. Notably, devices running Android 7 or earlier would not receive updates for the app.

April 9 and October 13: The issue continues with the YouTube app, one of the apps that comes pre-installed on many devices. Users receive notifications that a new update is available, but when they check, there is no app listed in the "Downloading" list. However, when they go directly to the YouTube app page on the Play Store, the "Update" option still appears and is actionable.

Causes and solutions

This issue could be due to a system bug or a change in the way the Google Play Store handles updates for system-level apps. One theory is that Google is expanding the way it automatically updates system apps in the same way that Google Play Services is silently updated through the Play Store, without showing up in the "Downloading" section.

If you have turned off automatic updates, this may cause system apps to never receive the latest version. Users must actively check through other sources or directly go to the app listing in the Play Store to update manually.
