Every year, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ma (79 years old, Vang Danh ward) regularly spends two months at Quang Ninh Traditional Medicine Hospital for treatment. She is one of many elderly people who trust and choose Oriental medicine to take care of their health. Ms. Ma said: “I suffered from back pain, knee pain, insomnia, high blood pressure and myocardial ischemia. After many sessions of acupuncture, massage, and Oriental medicine, many symptoms have clearly improved. After one session of treatment, my neck and shoulders did not hurt for a whole year.”
Similarly, Mrs. Tran Thi Thien (80 years old, Cam Pha ward) has also been attached to the hospital for many years. After a stroke in 2018 that left her hand numb and half of her body weak, she persevered in combining Eastern and Western medicine. Up to now, her health has improved significantly. “The doctor also guided me on exercises at home. I go to the hospital three times a year, each time for about 20 days. Every time I come back, my body feels lighter,” Mrs. Thien shared.
The Department of Geriatrics (Quang Ninh Traditional Medicine Hospital) has long been a trusted address for the elderly in health care. The department currently has 60 planned beds and 80 actual beds, but at peak times, the number of patients reaches 110-120 people. According to Dr. CKI Do Manh Dung (Deputy Head of the Department of Geriatrics), the elderly often have many chronic diseases such as spinal degeneration, osteoarthritis, insomnia, neurasthenia... These diseases are difficult to completely treat with Western medicine, are easy to relapse and affect mobility and spirit. Meanwhile, Oriental medicine has many methods such as acupuncture, massage, acupressure, herbal medicine... suitable for the elderly's physical condition, helping to treat comprehensively, prolong effectiveness and improve resistance. For the elderly, the goal of treatment is not only to cure the disease, but also to maintain the ability to take care of themselves, improve quality of life.
In addition to inpatient treatment, many patients who live nearby also choose daytime inpatient treatment, going to the hospital in the morning and returning home in the afternoon, both ensuring health and convenience in daily life.
Not only using traditional medicine, the treatment regimens at Quang Ninh Traditional Medicine Hospital are all built on the foundation of close coordination between traditional medicine and modern medicine. Before using traditional medicine methods, patients are examined by modern methods such as ultrasound, biochemical tests, imaging diagnosis... Thanks to that, the treatment process is guaranteed to be more accurate, comprehensive and safe.
The treatment regimens here also focus on rehabilitation. Techniques such as physical therapy, exercise therapy, hyperbaric oxygen... are performed methodically, combined harmoniously with electroacupuncture, hydroacupuncture, acupressure massage, traditional medicine, bringing about clear results in recovery after stroke, treatment of insomnia, prolonged musculoskeletal pain... In particular, according to many patients, the dedication and thoughtfulness of the team of doctors and nurses is the factor that makes them stick with the clinic for a long time. "Each treatment is like a vacation. Being cared for, talked to, encouraged... so even though I have a chronic illness, I still feel very comfortable mentally," Ms. Tran Thi Thien added.
The province currently has over 1,300 traditional medicine hospital beds. The rate of examination and treatment by traditional medicine increases every year. At the provincial level, inpatient treatment by traditional medicine accounts for 20.1%; outpatient treatment reaches 13%. At the grassroots level, this rate is higher, inpatient treatment by traditional medicine reaches 20.6%; outpatient treatment is nearly 23.5%. In addition, the province also has 126 traditional medicine clinics and private traditional medicine clinics licensed to operate.
Quang Ninh is one of the localities that has early implemented the model of combining traditional medicine and modern medicine from the provincial to the communal level. Currently, 100% of commune health stations have implemented examination and treatment using traditional medicine; general hospitals have also established Oriental medicine departments or interdisciplinary departments with rehabilitation. In particular, health insurance policies help people, especially the elderly, easily access quality services at the provincial level.
