Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore on November 19, Rishi Sunak stressed the importance of workers mastering the skills of understanding artificial intelligence (AI), which he said was crucial to avoid losing their positions to those proficient in this technology.

As companies increasingly replace interns with AI, Mr. Sunak has advised his two teenage daughters that while they may soon be managing AI bots, that doesn’t mean humans themselves should become machines. In addition to using AI tools, he encourages them to develop interpersonal skills like empathy and critical thinking.

The former British Prime Minister believes that society will never lose the importance of thinking, reasoning and asking critical questions, so these are extremely important skills for young people to develop. He shares his views on skills and the job market, which are drawn from research by Stanford economists and data from LinkedIn. He affirms that he will ensure his children spend time cultivating these skills while growing up.

Mr Sunak joins a growing chorus of experts predicting that workers will have to learn to manage teams of “AI agents” – software programs that can automate tasks – and he sees the era of these agents arriving relatively quickly.

Everyone from new graduates to senior executives will have to get used to managing teams of AI agents, Sunak said. Young graduates will need to understand how to delegate tasks to AI and how to verify the accuracy of the work it does. This requires a mindset of continuous learning and curiosity.

Mr Sunak's comments come as tech leaders, like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have warned that AI could shrink the low-end job market for knowledge workers. Since leaving office in July 2024, Mr Sunak has taken on advisory roles at Microsoft, Anthropic and Goldman Sachs.

While in office, Mr. Sunak chaired the UK's first AI Safety Summit in 2023, which attracted many top politicians and technology leaders. At the Bloomberg event, he advocated open AI regulation and said that governments should work with AI labs to assess the risks of this technology.
