Come to Truong Sa: Bring love, receive trust

That is the story of Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh - a typical fisherman in My A fishing village, Pho Quang ward (Duc Pho town). He and his friends travel all over the sea, especially sticking to the traditional fishing grounds in Hoang Sa to catch seafood.

In May, the road to Pho Quang ward (Duc Pho town) is brightly sunny. At My A port, ships take advantage of the opportunity to get oil, fresh water, rice, fish sauce... to prepare for a new sea trip. Fisherman Nguyen Duc Thanh is checking the voyage monitoring equipment on the deck, when I ask him about it, he smiles and says: "The sea is calm. We have to take advantage of it!"

Persistently stick to the sea

Fisherman Nguyen Duc Thanh is 51 years old this year, with 32 years of experience at sea. At first, he followed his father to fish in the lagoon in the Ly Son sea area. Every afternoon he went out to sea, at night he spread the net, cast the net, and the next morning he sailed back to the dock. Although he was diligent and patient, the amount of fish caught in the lagoon was not much. It was not until 2008 that Mr. Thanh was able to buy his own 15m long boat, expanding the fishing grounds from the Quang Ngai sea area to Da Nang . Thus, he fulfilled his dream of drifting at sea for a long time.

Mr. Thanh said, there were days when I brought the ship into Da Nang port to sell fish, refuel, and saw the fishing fleet returning from the far sea, the national flag fluttering on the ship, the hold full of fish, I had a desire to go out to sea to catch seafood. That's why my wife and I saved money to build a new ship. It wasn't until 9 years later that I was able to build a new ship 17m long, fully equipped with modern equipment to meet the needs of purse seine fishing in the Hoang Sa fishing grounds.

Mr. Thanh said, when going out to sea, if the weather is calm, the fish will swim a lot, making it easier to catch fish. But if the wind is strong and the ocean currents are fast, it will be difficult to catch fish. Therefore, I have to practice looking at the sky, the clouds, and the water to predict the fish's swimming path. There were times when the sea was not favorable, and the fishermen in the group were frustrated and brought the boat back to shore, but if I stayed for a few days, I caught fish again.

Experienced

Offshore fishing, a fishing trip usually lasts nearly a month. At My A fishing port, after each offshore trip, fisherman Nguyen Duc Thanh's boat is always full of fish. Fish brighten people's faces and after each fishing trip, he clearly understands that to conquer the open sea, one needs experience, perseverance, and especially the help of a united group of fishermen at sea in sharing fishing grounds, helping each other overcome difficulties when the boat breaks down or faces storms...

In the past, the My A sea area was filled with sand, filling up the estuary and channels. Many ships in the calm sea season had to enter the Sa Huynh estuary (Duc Pho town), Sa Ky ( Quang Ngai city), or Da Nang port to sell fish and refuel. After that, the State invested tens of billions of dong to dredge the channels and build My A fishing port, creating favorable conditions for ships to enter and exit to catch seafood. As the years passed, the My A sea area has now become a bright spot in the development of the maritime industry in Quang Ngai. Fisherman Nguyen Duc Thanh and his fellow ships have always been steadfast at sea. Hoang Sa archipelago is always the way back and forth for Mr. Thanh and the fishermen in My A fishing village.

When the State launched the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, to help remove the "yellow card" for seafood, fisherman Nguyen Duc Thanh clearly understood that if Vietnamese seafood penetrated the European market, the fishing industry would develop and fishing efficiency would be higher. Therefore, he trusted the State's policy more and more, strictly following the law when fishing at sea. "My boat does not fish in foreign waters. The ship always has a voyage monitoring device on board so that the authorities can monitor and strictly trace the origin of seafood. When going out to sea, I often remind my brothers in the fishing group to strictly follow the regulations against IUU fishing," said Mr. Thanh.

Mr. Thanh is loved by fishermen not only for his bravery, but also for his kindness and loyalty to his fellow fishermen. He actively contributes money to build fishing villages and contributes to the local Fishermen Support Fund to help fishermen whose boats are in distress at sea. My A fishing village chief Nguyen Xet commented that Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh is a good businessman of the fishing village. No matter the circumstances, he always perseveres in staying at sea to develop the economy, while contributing to protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland. He is a shining example for young fishermen to follow.
