In preparation for the 2024-2025 school year, many high schools have organized counseling and support for 10th grade students to choose subject combinations. At Yen Phong 2 High School (Bac Ninh), this year the school will have 15 10th grade classes with a total of 676 students. Immediately after students were admitted, the school promoted and advised students and their families so that they could make the most appropriate choice. To date, 361 students have registered to choose natural science subject combinations, 315 students have registered to choose social subjects. Mr. Nguyen Duy Nam - Vice Principal of the school said: The 2018 generaleducation program aims to study according to ability and career orientation, so the school determines that counseling for 10th grade students is very important because it has a long-term impact on their studies and future.

Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh - Principal of Viet Duc High School ( Hanoi ) informed that August 15 is the last day for students to change their choice of combination. The school is ready to create all conditions for students to study according to their passion and desire. There have been cases where students, after registering, reconsidered and made changes. Whether it is once or twice or three times, we are ready to serve.

Similarly, Ms. Dang Ngoc Tu - Vice Principal of Kim Lien High School (Hanoi) said that in 3 years of implementation, the school has implemented many measures to provide in-depth counseling to students and parents. In addition to centralized counseling for the whole school, there are also group counseling rooms for more detailed counseling. The school's counseling team consists of teachers, heads of professional groups, and experienced teachers who are directly teaching that subject. Not only that, students have the right to change their choice of subject combinations before officially classifying and implementing teaching.

Students who choose the wrong subjects and have to re-choose have happened in previous school years. According to regulations, changing the combination of subjects will only be done when the school year ends. While other students learn knowledge in class under the guidance and instruction of subject teachers, students who choose the wrong combination and now want to re-choose will have to supplement their knowledge to pass the school's test. In reality, this is not easy, requiring great determination and effort from students and their families.

However, many schools said they would support students as much as possible when they wanted to change their subject groups. Ms. Nguyen Boi Quynh said that last school year, Viet Duc High School only had 2 cases of requesting to change subject groups, and the school advised on how to change to reduce the number of subjects that had to be made up. The school has arranged to teach this knowledge to students, but in general, when students change to another subject group, they need to consider carefully because they have to make up the knowledge of the new subject to ensure the continuity and connection of knowledge. If the number of subjects to be made up is large, 2-3 subjects will actually make it very difficult for students to access knowledge in the following school years.

Note on future direction

From 2025, the high school graduation exam will be conducted in a new format in terms of subjects and structure, so candidates need to make the right decision to have more opportunities in the future. In particular, this exam will have 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects, Math and Literature, and 2 elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12. Therefore, according to experts, the selection of the combination also needs to take into account this exam as well as meet the requirements of separate exams for admission to universities from 2025.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam ( Military Technical Academy), to choose the right combination of subjects, it is necessary to base on the ability and talent of each student. After choosing the subjects that are suitable for the first two factors, students should choose the subject that best serves their future work. For example, if you plan to study a profession related to art, it is clear that knowledge of fine arts and music will be good for future career development, so you need to study those two subjects.
