In An Giang province, after 1954, to meet the requirements of combat missions in this period, the armed teams "That Son Army", "Armed Propaganda Team No. 8" gradually developed, forming battalion-level units, such as: Battalion 510, Battalion 512, Battalion 364. The provincial armed forces were gradually consolidated and developed, combining internal military operations to remove outposts, obtain enemy weapons to equip us, build and consolidate bases and promote armed propaganda, destroy evil, break the shackles, and mobilize the people to rise up to gain partial control of the government.
After the Dong Khoi movement (1960), the provincial armed forces were consolidated and developed, bases were expanded in connection with many large liberated areas; the system of "concave" bases was built everywhere, continuously from the border mountainous areas to the rural plains. The armed forces and people of An Giang organized many battles to wear down and destroy the enemy, expand the liberated areas, and create an intertwined position with the enemy. A typical example in this period was the decisive battle of 128 days and nights (from November 7, 1968 - February 23, 1969) at Tuc Dup hill, Co To mountain (Tri Ton district). We faced an enemy force 400 times larger, enduring thousands of tons of bombs and artillery for more than 3 consecutive months. In the end, the enemy had to pay a heavy price with more than 2,000 soldiers worn out and destroyed and millions of dollars in war expenses. The victory at Tuc Dup was a horror for the “Pentagon” and many American and puppet generals and colonels. Tuc Dup has become a historical symbol of the victory of the An Giang army and people over the American invaders with the eight golden words “Resiliently hold on, firmly hold To Mountain”.
In 1974, in harmony with the revolutionary spirit of the whole country, the two provinces of Long Chau Tien and Long Chau Ha (separated from An Giang according to the name of the revolutionary government) urgently made an action plan with the spirit of "1 day equals 20 years", consolidating and developing the armed forces from the province to the communes and hamlets; destroying each enemy sub-region, expanding the controlled area, combining the main force to liberate the whole province. On April 28, 1975, Military Region 9 directed Long Chau Ha province to send the provincial armed forces to liberate Ha Tien - the enemy's weakest place. Marching to Nam Thai Son, hearing the news of Duong Van Minh's surrender, the Provincial Party Committee decided to divide the forces, one wing continued to advance to Ha Tien, the second wing returned to Ba The to liberate Long Xuyen.
On the evening of April 30, 1975, we arrived at Ba The. Here, the district's uprising forces had complete control. On the morning of May 1, 1975, the provincial armed forces surrounded and called on Nui Sap Sub-region to surrender. At noon of the same day, after completely controlling Hue Duc district, the provincial armed forces advanced to Long Xuyen town. From April 26, 1975, the inner-city forces with 2 secret self-defense squads clung to the target, waiting for coordinated forces. On the afternoon of April 30, 1975, the An Giang Provincial Governor left his post and fled. Taking advantage of the opportunity, on the afternoon of May 1, a main force company of the Military Region 9's armed forces broke through the enemy's defense lines, combined with the provincial and city armed forces to completely liberate Long Xuyen at 6:30 p.m.
In Chau Doc, on the morning of May 1, 1975, the local revolutionary forces rose up to occupy the main office in the inner city, combining with the armed forces to seize the town government at noon. Chau Thanh, Chau Phu, Tri Ton districts... were also liberated one after another. By 3:00 p.m. on May 6, 1975, Cho Moi district - the last locality of An Giang province - was completely liberated. After that, the troops continued to advance to Chau Thanh. On the evening of April 30, 1975, we captured bridge No. 5, supporting the local forces to seize the government of Vinh Hanh and Can Dang communes. On the morning of May 1, we defeated the puppet security forces that fled from Tri Ton. At noon, we surrounded and called for the surrender of Chau Thanh district, a part of the enemy ran through Binh Thuy station to set up a "death defense" line. We occupied the district at 16:00 a.m., and sent a part down to surround the Me Linh engineering camp. In the evening, we coordinated forces from Long Xuyen to occupy Me Linh camp and the next morning we defeated the enemy at Binh Thuy station. Next, we advanced to Chau Phu. On May 2, 1975, Chau Phu was completely liberated.
Thus, by the afternoon of May 2, 1975, Long Chau Ha province was completely liberated. A military administration was established, the remnants of the army were hunted down, and the lives of the people were stabilized. From April 28 to 30, 1975, Long Chau Tien province urgently reorganized its forces, weapons, ammunition, prepared bases, plans and combat strategies. In Tan Chau, on the afternoon of April 30, we liberated Vinh Xuong commune. On the morning of May 1, we continued to occupy Tan An, Vinh Hoa, the sub-region, and the Vinh Don naval base, liberating the district capital. In An Phu, from the afternoon of April 30, the district forces divided into 3 groups and advanced towards the town from Phu Hoi, Khanh Binh, and Phu Huu. On the evening of May 1, we entered the town and on the morning of May 2, we took over the district capital, and proceeded to hunt down the remnants of the army along the border. On May 4, the remaining troops in Binh Thanh Dong, Hiep Xuong, and Hung Nhon surrendered one after another, and Phu Tan was completely liberated...
Promoting the patriotic tradition, the spirit of determination to fight and win of the People's Army and the qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" in the new period, An Giang Military today actively studies, improves training level, combat readiness, and successfully completes assigned tasks. Each officer and soldier upholds responsibility in building the unit, building a "lean, compact, strong" army, by 2030 building a revolutionary, disciplined, elite, and modern army; bringing our country into a new era of development.
