The number of people getting vaccinated against dengue fever increased by 50%

Vietnam in general and Dong Nai province in particular are circulating all 4 types of dengue virus, including: Den-1, Den-2, Den-3 and Den-4. Of which, type Den-2 is dominant in the community. This is the virus strain that can cause serious complications such as severe dengue and dengue shock syndrome. People who have previously contracted other types of the virus are also at risk of serious complications when reinfected with the Den-2 virus.

Explaining the mechanism of dengue fever reinfection, specialist doctor I Bach Thi Chinh, Medical Director of VNVC Vaccination System, said that after contracting dengue fever for the first time, the patient's body will create long-term specific antibodies against that virus type and have temporary cross-immunity against other types for about 6 months.

However, when reinfected with a different virus type, the old antibodies can bind to the new dengue virus, causing “antibody-dependent enhancement” (ADE), making the body unable to neutralize and destroy the virus. On the contrary, they make it easier for the virus to penetrate immune cells, increase the level of inflammatory response, trigger a “cytokine storm” that attacks healthy cells and organs. This makes the bleeding worse, causing massive bleeding, multiple organ failure, and even death. Dengue reinfection can cause severe illness, with a mortality rate many times higher than the first infection.

To prevent dengue fever, in addition to the usual measures, people should be vaccinated against all four strains of the virus that cause dengue fever. People aged 4 years and older, whether they have had or have had dengue fever, should be vaccinated to reduce the risk of infection, reinfection and severe complications. A 2-dose schedule, 3 months apart, helps prevent the risk of getting the disease by more than 80% and the risk of hospitalization by more than 90%. This vaccine is not for pregnant women. Therefore, women should be vaccinated at least 1-3 months before becoming pregnant.

Currently, in Dong Nai , dengue fever vaccine has been deployed at vaccination facilities of the VNVC system, the Provincial Center for Disease Control and a number of hospitals in the province. According to statistics of the units, from the beginning of June 2025 to now, the number of people getting vaccinated against dengue fever has increased by about 50% compared to the first months of the year.
