On his personal podcast, Luong Xuan Truong shared the story of how coach Park Hang Seo built the playing style during his early days leading the Vietnamese national team and U23 team. The midfielder, born in 1995, expressed his admiration for how coach Park focused on small details in defense, and revealed that this is something Vietnamese football still lacks and not every player receives such training from a young age.
“The football philosophy of coach Park Hang Seo and his assistant Lee Young Jin leans towards defensive counter-attacking. Especially in the early stages, they prioritized building a solid defense, prioritizing avoiding defeat before thinking about winning. Even the smallest details, such as defensive posture, positioning, and situational awareness, were meticulously taught. Generally speaking, these are details that very few coaches delve into.”
"Personally, I think these are the things that Vietnamese football is really lacking. In South Korea or Japan, these are basic details that every player learns when they are in the U13 or U15 age groups. But in Vietnam, players don't learn such detailed things," said Luong Xuan Truong.
Luong Xuan Truong also affirmed that Coach Park Hang Seo does not advocate an extremely defensive style of play, but rather a calculated approach to controlling the tempo of the match. More importantly, Coach Park understands the typical characteristics of Vietnamese people such as unity, indomitable will, intelligence, agility, and diligence, in order to build a suitable playing style for the national team.
“Coach Park Hang Seo builds a disciplined playing style, but in terms of attack, he is not strict or restrictive, and does not demand excessive simplicity. Technically gifted players like Cong Phuong or Quang Hai can still freely express their creativity,” Luong Xuan Truong shared.
However, Luong Xuan Truong frankly stated that Coach Park Hang Seo's philosophy is quite outdated compared to Korean football in 2018. This is because Coach Park belongs to the classic generation, while Korean football now sets higher standards and plays a more modern style.
The player from Tuyen Quang commented: "In my opinion, considering the situation of Vietnamese football at that time (2018), the way Coach Park worked and applied his philosophy was extremely wise and correct."
