With a history spanning over 500 years, Cay pottery has long been considered on par with renowned pottery styles such as Chu Dau, Bat Trang, Phu Lang, and Tho Ha… Despite more than five centuries of ups and downs, Cay pottery has never been lost. What sets Cay pottery apart from other types of pottery is that it is entirely handcrafted with distinctive raised patterns. To create unique and distinctive Cay pottery products, the artisans need to be skillful and creative. The drawings and patterns on Cay pottery are delicate, meticulous, and especially, they must be hand-painted to truly capture the essence of this pottery style. Cay pottery is handcrafted in every stage. The traditional firing process also gives Cay pottery its distinctive character compared to other types of pottery. The distinctive blood-red color of Cay pottery is created by adjusting the firing temperature combined with the use of natural glazes. Today, Cay pottery products are restored in the traditional style with motifs and patterns from the Ly, Tran, and Le dynasties. The paving tiles, in the style of the Tran Dynasty, are handcrafted by the ceramic artisans of Cay. Despite experiencing many ups and downs, and although no longer as prosperous as before, Cay pottery remains a "monument" of ceramics in the Eastern region, possessing its own unique values.THANH CHUNG - NGUYEN MO
