On July 31, the People's Committee of Thanh Hoa City announced that the Provincial People's Council had approved the policy of merging Dong Son district into Thanh Hoa City. At the same time, it established wards and arranged commune-level administrative units for the 2023-2025 period of this new administrative unit.
Dong Son district will transfer the entire 82.87 km2 of natural area and population of more than 101,000 people to Thanh Hoa city.
Specifically, the entire 82.87 square kilometers of natural area and population of more than 101,000 people of Dong Son district will be merged into Thanh Hoa city.
After the merger, the name Thanh Hoa city will remain; this new administrative unit will have more than 228 km2 of natural area and a population of more than 615,000 people.
Regarding the reason for this name, because the name Thanh Hoa has existed since 1029, the name of the former capital or the city today is always associated with the name of the province with the name Thanh Hoa Noi Tran (Thanh Hoa town). In 1889, it was established as a town, called Thanh Hoa, in 1994, it was established as a city, also called Thanh Hoa.
After the merger, Thanh Hoa city has more than 228km2 of natural area and a population of more than 615,000 people.
The name Thanh Hoa has existed for nearly 1,000 years. Throughout the process of separation, expansion, establishment of administrative units and through many periods of development of the country and the province, the provincial capital and urban area name Thanh Hoa has remained unchanged.
In addition, the name Thanh Hoa City is associated with the name Thanh Hoa, one of the lands bearing the identity of the thousand-year-old Vietnamese culture, a land rich in historical, cultural and revolutionary traditions, an important area, the "fence" of the country; a land of "spiritual land, talented people", the starting place of many Vietnamese feudal dynasties such as: Tien Le Dynasty, Ho Dynasty, So Le Dynasty, Le Trung Hung and Nguyen Dynasty.
Besides, after "weighing - measuring - counting", Thanh Hoa city has a population of over 500,000 people, thousands of businesses located in the area; keeping the name Thanh Hoa city will reduce the impact and influence on the socio -economy and people's lives compared to other names; contribute to saving time, costs, reducing the pressure on handling administrative procedures on state management agencies, due to having to change personal identification information, identification papers, contact addresses of people, organizations, and businesses.
The name Thanh Hoa city is also consistent with the designation of Thanh Hoa provincial capital in many important central and provincial documents, such as: Resolution No. 58-NQ/TW dated August 5, 2020 of the Politburo , Provincial Planning, Thanh Hoa Urban Planning, Resolution No. 05-NQ/TU dated October 25, 2021 of the Standing Committee of Thanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee (all using the names Thanh Hoa City and Thanh Hoa urban area).
On the other hand, the name Thanh Hoa City also ensures the provisions of law and current practice when merging rural administrative units into urban administrative units, the name of the urban administrative unit is kept intact.
Also according to the report of Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee, through a survey, nationwide there are currently 29 provincial cities with the same name as the province; in the Northern and North Central regions alone, there are 20 provincial cities (accounting for 68.96%) with the same name as the province such as: Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Yen Bai, Lao Cai... and no provincial city has changed its name in the recent period.
Thanh Hoa city after the merger borders Hoang Hoa, Thieu Hoa, Trieu Son, Quang Xuong, Nong Cong districts and Sam Son city.
In addition, after the merger, wards will be established in Thanh Hoa city including: Rung Thong ward, Dong Thinh ward, Hoang Quang ward, Hoang Dai ward.
In addition, the arrangement of commune-level administrative units of Thanh Hoa city includes: merging the entire 0.87 km2 of natural area and more than 16,000 people of Tan Son ward into Phu Son ward. After merging, the ward's name is Phu Son ward.
After merging Dong Son district into Thanh Hoa city, establishing wards and arranging commune-level administrative units, Thanh Hoa province has 26 administrative units, including 2 cities: Thanh Hoa city and Sam Son city, 2 towns: Nghi Son town and Bim Son town and 22 districts.
Thanh Hoa city alone has 33 wards and 14 communes.
In addition to merging Dong Son district into Thanh Hoa city, in the coming time, Thanh Hoa will also arrange commune-level administrative units under Sam Son city, Nghi Son town; Nga Son, Ha Trung, Hau Loc, Hoang Hoa, Yen Dinh, Trieu Son and Thach Thanh districts.
