From May to July each year, fishermen in Ly Son island district (Quang Ngai province) are busy heading out to sea with seine nets to catch seafood, mainly anchovies. This daily life has become an interesting subject for photography enthusiasts.
The "dance" of the green nets spreads across the sea in various shapes, such as circles, hearts, or lotus leaves. Viewed from above, each net is stretched taut across the sea, as if arranged skillfully by an artist.
Purse seine fishing, which operates on the principle of filtering water to catch fish, is deployed from the vessel and then pulled back onto the vessel. Purse seine nets are specifically designed to catch schools of fish and are only deployed to a certain depth. When a school of anchovies is detected, fishermen use the net to encircle and catch them. The vessel is currently pulling in the purse seine net. During the fishing process, the shape of the purse seine net constantly changes. From the moment it is deployed, it is a flat net; at the end of deployment, it is a cylindrical shape; and during the reeling process, it takes on a spherical cone shape.
These are some thoughts that author Vu Minh Duc wants to share with the audience through his photo series "Ly Son Island during the purse seine fishing season," submitted through the Happy Vietnam Photo and Video Contest, organized by the Department of External Information, Ministry of Information and Communications .
