Midfielder Mateo Kovacic will become Manchester City's first signing of summer 2013, after Chelsea agreed to sell him for $38 million.
Two weeks ago, Man City reached a personal agreement with Kovacic on contract terms. Today, June 21st, Chelsea agreed to transfer the Croatian midfielder to Man City for $38 million. Kovacic is 29 years old and has only one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, so Chelsea accepted a loss after having previously spent $49 million to sign him from Real Madrid in the 2019-2020 season.

Man City will pay Chelsea $32 million upfront. The remaining $6 million will be paid depending on Man City's performance, not on Kovacic's individual performance. He will undergo a medical examination in the next few days before signing the contract.
Kovacic will be Manchester City's first signing of the summer of 2023, and he is expected to fill the void left by Ilkay Gundogan. The German midfielder's contract with Man City expires at the end of June 2023, and he has no intention of staying. Like Gundogan, Kovacic's preferred position is left-sided central midfielder.
Kovacic has won 17 titles in his career, including four Champions League titles and one Europa League. He rose to prominence with Dinamo Zagreb before moving to Inter and Real Madrid. According to ESPN , Guardiola has long admired Kovacic and believes he is a good fit for Manchester City's current style of play.
If Kovacic wins the Champions League with Man City, he will become only the second player in history to win the title with three different clubs, after Clarence Seedorf. Previously, Kovacic won it three times with Real Madrid and once with Chelsea.
Also on June 21st, Chelsea agreed to sell goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to Al Ahli, Hakim Ziyech to Al Nassr, and Kalidou Koulibaly to Al Hilal. All three teams play in the Saudi Pro League – a league where Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema also participate. Prior to this, Chelsea allowed midfielder N'Golo Kante to join Al Ittihad on a free transfer after his contract expired.
