(CPV) - Last night and early this morning (September 20), the first matches in the Champions League group stage took place with extremely attractive matches. The defending champion Manchester City (Man City) played at home to welcome the representative from Serbia - Red Star Belgrade club. Three goals in the second half helped defending champion Man City come from behind to defeat Red Star Belgrade 3-1.

After winning all 5 rounds in the domestic league, Man City Club confidently entered the first group stage of the Champions League as the defending champion. Their opponent was Red Star Belgrade from Serbia. Being rated much higher and playing at home, it was not surprising that the defending champion put pressure on their opponent right from the first minutes of the match.

In the first 45 minutes of the first half, the defending champions had many opportunities to open the score but Rodri, Alvarez, Foden, Ake and Haaland were all denied by the away team's goalkeeper or crossbar.

In the last minute of the first half, a surprise happened, Mirko Ivanic passed the ball to Osman Bukari to break through and defeat goalkeeper Ederson in a one-on-one situation, although the linesman raised his flag for offside, but VAR intervened and confirmed the goal was valid for the away team. At the end of the first half, the two teams went to the break with the score 0-1 for the away team.

Entering the second half, the defending champions continued to pressure their opponents and in the 47th minute, the result came to them. From Haaland's pass, Alvaraz calmly escaped past goalkeeper Glazer and put the ball into the net. The match score was balanced at 1-1.

In the 60th minute, Alvarez took a free kick from the wing and the away team's goalkeeper Glazer misjudged the ball, he punched it away and it flew straight into the net, helping Alvarez score his second goal.

In the 73rd minute, Rodri sealed the 3-1 victory with a very delicate dribble and shot into the far corner. According to statistics in this match, the defending champion had 37 shots, including 16 shots on target of the away team. Thus, the English representative maintained a perfect record in the opening match of the Champions League in the past 5 years. This victory helped Man City get off to a smooth start on their journey to retain the title this year.

Results of some other matches: Barcelona won 5-0 against Antwerp; PSG won 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund; Milan drew 0-0 with Newcastle United.... Other matches in the first group stage of the 2023-2024 Champions League continue tomorrow morning./.
