As the Lunar New Year approaches, along National Highway 6, in the districts of Moc Chau and Van Ho ( Son La province ), a series of stalls selling peach blossoms for Tet (Lunar New Year) begin to appear. Most tourists passing through stop to buy bundles of plum blossoms and peach branches, loading them onto their vehicles before transporting them back to the lowlands, bringing with them the "springtime" of Northwest Vietnam.
Since the beginning of December, Giàng A Khố and his wife (from Pa Chè village, Vân Hồ commune, Vân Hồ district) have been waking up early every morning, braving the fog to transport their homegrown produce over 13km from their home to Mộc Châu agricultural town to sell to customers along the way.
Mr. A Kho shared: "Every year around December, when the weather starts to get cold and the vegetables grow lush and green, my wife and I bring them to sell along National Highway 6. Every household here does the same; whatever vegetables or potatoes they grow, or whatever animals they catch in the forest, they bring here to sell. The closer it gets to Tet (Lunar New Year), the more bustling the buying and selling atmosphere becomes. Mustard greens and Chinese cabbage are both priced at 10,000 dong per bunch."
Besides bundles of vegetables and baskets of potatoes, a characteristic feature of Tet is the abundance of peach and plum blossom branches that people in the highlands arrange along the national highway.
"This year, Tet (Lunar New Year) is late, so many peach blossoms bloomed before the holiday, making the price of peach blossoms a bit cheaper than in previous years, but not significantly different. The price still ranges from 150,000 to 500,000 VND per branch. In recent years, due to market demand, peach growers have also bundled smaller peach and plum branches to serve customers. Each bundle costs between 20,000 and 30,000 VND," said Mr. Giang A Kho.
The sale of vegetables, fruits, and peaches during Tet (Lunar New Year) has provided his family with a significant additional income. On good days, they earn 1-2 million dong, while on slow days they still earn a few hundred thousand dong. A Kho and his wife estimate that in 2023, their family earned over 40 million dong from selling peaches and vegetables during Tet.
Besides the plum and peach blossoms that evoke the festive atmosphere of Tet in the highlands, Moc Chau strawberries are also in season at this time and are being sold at prices ranging from 100,000 to 300,000 VND/kg depending on the variety.
The stalls along National Highway 6
Ms. Phan Thi Hue (a tourist from Hanoi ) shared: "This is my first time visiting Van Ho district, but the stalls along National Highway 6 really impressed me. The peach and plum blossoms clearly evoke the Tet atmosphere. This time, I also took the opportunity to buy some vegetables, strawberries, and peach blossoms to take home."
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Thai Ba Sinh, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Van Ho District, Son La Province, said: “Currently, Van Ho District still has about 500 hectares of various types of peach trees, concentrated in the two communes of Long Luong and Van Ho along National Highway 6. Of that, this year, the area of peach trees grown for flowers accounts for more than 200 hectares, and this area can be harvested this year to serve the Tet holiday.”
According to Mr. Sinh, besides peaches and plums, the mustard greens and Chinese cabbage, characteristic of the Mong people in the highlands, are also products favored by tourists from the lowlands.
