Mbappe committed a dangerous foul in the match against Alaves. |
In the 38th minute at the Mendizorroza stadium during the 31st round of La Liga, Mbappe was sent off after a tackle described as "brutal" against a former Real Madrid player. Keith Hackett, former Director of the Professional Referees Organization (PGMOL) in England, called for a 10-match suspension for Mbappe.
"That was a violent tackle that threatened the safety of the opponent," Hackett told Football Insider . "The referee was right to issue a red card, but that's not enough. Mbappe needs a 10-match ban to set an example. We need to put an end to this kind of behavior on the pitch."
Real Madrid secured a narrow 1-0 victory and continue to chase Barcelona in the La Liga title race, but Mbappe's playing time is under threat if a heavy penalty is imposed.
The likelihood of a 10-match ban is quite low, but the French striker certainly faces a three-match suspension in domestic competitions. This means he could miss the matches against Athletic Bilbao, Getafe, and potentially the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona.
The red card was the first time Mbappe had been sent off since joining Real Madrid. While playing for PSG, the French star had previously received three red cards. "Mbappe is a great talent, but his lack of self-control can damage his image and the team," Marca commented.
Mbappe scores after a superb free-kick setup. In the early hours of March 30th, Mbappe scored in Real Madrid's 3-2 victory over Leganes in the 29th round of La Liga.
