Where will Messi fit into Flick's Barcelona team?

Between reality and nostalgia, Messi remains a beautiful obsession for Barcelona. A visit, a message, and the whole city dreams of the impossible once again.

A social media post, a photo taken at Camp Nou, and the dream is rekindled in the hearts of Barcelona fans. Lionel Messi hasn't said he'll return, but just a hint is enough to send the football world into a frenzy. At Camp Nou, from the stands to the press conference room, the only question repeated over and over is: "If Messi returns, where will he stand in Hansi Flick's lineup?"

Football thrives on hope. For Messi, that hope has never faded. The bond between him and Barcelona is indelible. But turning that hope into reality faces many obstacles. From his relationship with the club's management to his physical condition, or simply the question of whether Barca still has a place for him in the new system.

The rift with Laporta has not yet closed.

No one will forget the day Messi left Barca in the summer of 2021. He broke down in tears at his farewell press conference, and fans felt like they had lost a piece of history. Three years have passed, but the pain hasn't truly subsided.

The relationship between Messi and President Joan Laporta remains a difficult rift to mend. Laporta says that the two are "gradually restoring their relationship," but Messi remains silent. According to former vice-president Jordi Mestre, "Messi's family is still very angry with Laporta." The way the club handled the contract that year has left a scar that is not easily healed.

Therefore, even though Messi once said, "I hope one day I can return to Barcelona, not just to say goodbye but to finish this unfinished journey," it is understood that these were words from the heart, not words from a negotiation.

If we set aside the emotional aspect, the tactical question becomes the real issue. Hansi Flick's Barcelona currently plays with a disciplined structure, strong pressing, and high speed. At 38, will Messi still have the physical fitness to adapt?

But football isn't just about running. Messi still has that weapon every system needs: the ability to make a difference. He may not have the same burst of speed as before, but those feet still know how to unlock defenses with a pass nobody sees.

Messi could play as an attacking midfielder if he returned to Barca.

In the current squad, there are only two suitable roles for him. One is as a "false nine," and the other is as a free-roaming attacking midfielder. In the Argentina national team, he usually plays in these two positions.

If deployed as a central striker, Messi could replace Lewandowski, who is 37 years old, in a more versatile role. He doesn't need to be a fixed center forward; he can simply drop deeper, connect the lines, and draw the opposing defense out of position. Then, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, or Dani Olmo could move diagonally inwards to exploit the space. Flick greatly favors this type of positional interchange. Messi, with his exceptional ability to read the game, would be the perfect fit for that structure.

The second option is equally logical: playing as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers. Here, he can play between the two lines, like a pure playmaker. This role is currently occupied by Fermin Lopez or Dani Olmo, but no one can match Messi's influence. With two defensive midfielders supporting him from behind, such as Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, he will have space to be creative without the burden of defensive duties.

The MLS season will end in December, and Messi will have nearly two months off before returning to Inter Miami in March. Between those fixtures is the 2026 World Cup, which could be his last with Argentina. Therefore, it's hard to imagine him risking his fitness for a short-term contract in Europe.

Messi is still maintaining his high level of performance in the US. He assists, scores goals, and remains the focal point of the team. But the MLS environment is vastly different from the pace and intensity of La Liga. Wearing the Barca shirt again would be a significant challenge, especially at the age of 38.

However, what Messi has achieved in the Argentina jersey shows that he still knows how to thrive at a high level. He adapts himself, playing with less movement but choosing his position more intelligently. In a team built around him, he still has the ability to change the course of the game.

The heart says "yes," reason says "no."

In reality, the chances of Messi returning to Camp Nou to play officially are almost zero. His relationship with Laporta, his fitness level, and his World Cup preparations make this transfer virtually impossible. But football isn't just about logic.

Messi has just arrived at Camp Nou.

Barca and Messi owe each other a fitting ending. He left without saying goodbye on the pitch, without hearing his final applause from the stands. Fans are still waiting for that moment, whether it's a friendly match, a symbolic minute of play, or a tribute.

Messi once said, "I hope one day I can return, not just to say goodbye, but to close the chapter on what was left unfinished." That statement alone was enough to fuel the dream. Therefore, even though reason dictates that it is impossible, the hearts of the Catalans still whisper the same question: "Why not?"

In the world of football, where the absurd can happen, the name Lionel Messi is always proof that – sometimes, the wildest dreams are what make this ball the most beautiful.
