Meta has started charging for AI features on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

This move is seen as an attempt to diversify revenue streams amidst the American technology giant's spending of tens of billions of dollars on the artificial intelligence (AI) race.

According to the latest announcement, Meta will be launching Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus packages priced from $2.99 to $3.99 per month. Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus will cost $3.99/month, while WhatsApp Plus will be $2.99/month.

These packages add many advanced features such as more detailed data analysis tools, Story view tracking, increased user reach, profile customization, and several tools to support interaction and personalize the experience.

Notably, Meta has also begun directly commercializing its AI services. The company plans to test two Meta AI subscription packages starting in June in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia before expanding to other markets.

The Meta One Plus plan, priced at $7.99 per month, is aimed at those who frequently create images and videos using AI or need the ability to handle more complex tasks. Meanwhile, the Meta One Premium plan, priced at $19.99 per month, offers significantly higher usage limits and more advanced AI features.

According to Meta, basic AI features will continue to be offered for free. However, users who need more advanced features, especially for AI-powered content creation or handling complex inference requests, will have to pay to expand their usage.

In addition to individual users, Meta also offers service packages for businesses and content creators. The Meta One Essential package costs approximately $15/month and includes benefits such as account verification, social media ecosystem integration, and several management tools. A more advanced option is Meta One Advanced, priced at around $50/month, which enhances content visibility, prioritizes search results, and supports follower growth.

Analysts believe Meta's push towards a subscription model reflects the pressure to recoup its massive investments in AI infrastructure. While advertising revenue remains its primary source, the company is seeking new revenue streams from paid digital and AI services.

With this trend, the era of completely free use of Meta's social media platforms may gradually change, as more and more premium features are included in subscription packages for users willing to pay.
