Free tuition joy before the new school year

In the last days of August, the atmosphere of preparing for the new school year is bustling throughout the provinces. On the streets, the image of parents holding their children’s hands to go shopping at bookstores, clothing stores, and shoe stores has become familiar. The laughter, joy mixed with a bit of hustle and bustle of parents before the first day of school evokes a scene that is both exciting and warm.

In that common joy, the people of the whole country in general and Lao Cai province in particular also received good news: the Politburo has decided to exempt tuition fees for students from kindergarten to high school. This is not only a decision of economic significance, but also a clear demonstration of the good nature of our social system - always putting people, especially the future generation, at the center of development.

In everyday life, tuition fees are a regular expense that almost every family with children going to school must calculate. For many people, the amount of a few hundred thousand VND per month for a child seems small, but accumulated over the entire school year, for many children and in a difficult economic context... it has become a significant burden. This is even more evident in the families of workers, farmers, and freelancers - people whose income mainly depends on manual labor, small-scale trading or agricultural production, which is often unstable and easily affected by weather, disease or market fluctuations.

Ms. Nguyen Mai Huong, residing in Co Phuc 8 residential group, Tran Yen commune, is an example. She works as a night food vendor, a job that is inherently unstable in terms of customers, especially when it rains or during the pandemic, when income drops significantly. Her family has two children, the older one is in third grade, the second one is in kindergarten. Each month, the tuition fees for the two children combined is a not small expense for the family.

“Thank you to the State for exempting the children from tuition fees. Without having to pay tuition fees, the family can afford to send the children to school,” Ms. Huong emotionally shared. Ms. Huong’s simple thoughts contained joy, relief and faith in the Party and State’s policies for the people.

Immediately after the media reported the Politburo’s decision to exempt students from tuition fees, parents expressed their excitement, because exempting tuition fees for education from kindergarten to high school not only shows deep concern for education but also affirms that the country’s economic strength and potential have truly grown. Previously, there were still sad stories about students having to drop out of school because their parents could not afford to pay tuition fees, but now, when that burden is removed, the door to knowledge will be wider open to all children, regardless of economic circumstances or place of residence.

Mr. Chu Hoang Son - Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Finance said: "According to calculations, Lao Cai province collects about 150 billion VND in tuition fees each year. Every year, the two provinces of Yen Bai and Lao Cai have previously applied many policies to exempt and reduce tuition fees for students at all levels. Implementing the Politburo's Decision and the National Assembly's Resolution, the Lao Cai Provincial Finance Department is advising the Provincial People's Committee to issue documents to implement the policy of exempting tuition fees in the 2025-2026 school year."

For the education sector, the tuition-free policy brings many practical benefits, in particular, the pressure to maintain student numbers will be significantly reduced. From now on, there will no longer be a situation where students drop out of school because their families have not or cannot afford tuition fees. This is an important step forward in the effort to universalize comprehensive education and improve the intellectual level of the people.

Teacher Hoang Thi Mai Ha - Owner of Baby Star independent nursery group, Yen Bai ward said: “More than 300 families of Baby Star preschool received good news when the State exempted tuition fees for students. In particular, students at non-public educational institutions are also subsidized by the State for tuition fees. Personally, as both an investor and a teacher, I find this policy very meaningful, taking care of the career of educating people and especially very fair between public and non-public institutions”.

Many experts in the fields of education and economics have commented: Historically, not every country has had the conditions to exempt tuition fees for all levels of general education. That requires strong financial potential, an effective budget system and, above all, the leadership's priority orientation on human development.

This decision of the Politburo is a clear demonstration of the superior nature of the socialist regime that we are building - a regime that always puts the interests of the people first. When people have their economic burdens reduced, they have more conditions to take care of their lives, spend time and resources on raising and educating their children. Having conditions to buy more reference books, invest in talent courses, sports or simply improve daily meals... these are positive impacts on social life.

In the long run, this is an “investment” that brings double benefits: it both improves the quality of education and contributes to reducing social inequality. A young generation with good learning conditions will be a high-quality workforce, contributing positively to the development of the country.

Immediately after the announcement of free tuition, the atmosphere of preparation for the new school year became even more exciting. The provincial education and training sector is also actively preparing conditions for the new school year. School facilities have been renovated, teaching equipment has been supplemented; teachers are active and ready to welcome students back to school in a fresh, motivating atmosphere.

Another school year is coming, not only the beginning of a new school year, but also the beginning of opportunities and dreams taking flight.
