Empowering poor women

Nearly 10 years ago, difficulties piled up when Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu (An Bang village) lost her husband to thyroid cancer, her health deteriorated, and she had to shoulder the family's finances alone to support her elderly mother, sick husband, and three young children's education... At that time, Ms. Thu received nearly 2 million VND in capital support from the "Savings Piggy Bank" model.

Following the principle of "using short-term gains to support long-term growth," Ms. Thu now owns nearly 70 coconut trees, 2 fish ponds, and a flock of nearly 1,000 chickens… a model that generates nearly 80 million VND per year, helping her family escape poverty and achieve economic stability.

“Back then, things were very difficult. Thanks to the women's association in the commune, we were able to expand our business. Now, my integrated farming model (garden-pond-livestock) is doing well. I hope that more and more women will receive the same support as me to have capital to start their businesses,” Ms. Thu shared.

Ms. Thu shared about the timely support provided by the "Piggy Bank" savings model.

Similarly, Ms. Ma Thi Bon received support from the "Savings Piggy Bank" model, which provided a foundation for her economic development. In 2020, after receiving 8 million VND in support plus her savings, she invested in raising breeding cows, and to date, the mother cows have been consistently producing one litter per year.

Ms. Bon said that, in addition to raising cattle, she also raises pigs, grows corn, and plants fruit trees, which has helped her family's economic situation improve.

"Every year, I participate in the 'Piggy Bank' savings program. Once I'm financially stable, it's the turn of other women to receive the same support I received before," added Ms. Bon.

Multiply acts of kindness

The "Savings Piggy Bank" model, implemented by the Women's Union of Dai Thanh commune for nearly 15 years, is based on the spirit of practicing thrift following President Ho Chi Minh's example. Every year, on President Ho Chi Minh's birthday (May 19th), women members in the branches, groups, and 3 clubs in the commune gather their savings from their piggy banks to collect and break them open.

Over the past period, the collected funds have supported hundreds of women from poor and near-poor households to improve their economic situation. At the same time, they have helped children of disadvantaged members purchase school supplies, computers, bicycles, etc., to continue their education.

"

“The economic situation of rural women is still difficult, so initially, saving money in piggy banks was limited. However, with awareness campaigns tailored to the specific circumstances of each branch and group, each woman enthusiastically participated within her family's means. To date, women members not only save money in piggy banks at home but also actively participate in clubs, groups, and branches.”

Ms. Phan Thi Ha - President of the Women's Union of Dai Thanh Commune

[ VIDEO ] - Ms. Phan Thi Ha - President of the Women's Union of Dai Thanh commune, shares about the significance of the "Savings Piggy Bank" model:

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hiep, President of the Women's Union of Dai Loc district, Dai Thanh is a disadvantaged commune in the district, however, the "Savings Piggy Bank" movement has been implemented very actively. Although this model is not new, it has created livelihoods, increased income, and spread beautiful and meaningful actions in the movement to learn from President Ho Chi Minh's example among women in Dai Loc.

This model will continue to spread among female members in Dai Loc district.

“In the coming time, the Women's Union of the district will continue to launch and encourage the spirit of learning from President Ho Chi Minh's example of thrift among its members. At the same time, it will implement more flexible and practical measures so that more disadvantaged women and children can receive assistance,” said Ms. Hiep.
