Unique grape growing model opens up suburban tourism

With a spirit of learning and not afraid of challenges, Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong (Tan Hung Hamlet, Ly Van Lam Commune, Ca Mau City, Ca Mau Province) boldly brought grapevines to grow on the land that was familiar with rice and shrimp. His vineyard now not only brings in income but also becomes a new eco-tourism destination, attracting many tourists.

"Attractive" vineyard in the heart of the city

Starting to grow grapes at the beginning of 2023, Mr. Cuong encountered many difficulties. "Here, growing grapes is something you have to do yourself, because no one has grown them before. It's new, there is no knowledge, there are failures, there are successful grape varieties and there are not. Then you have to learn a lot more," Mr. Cuong confided about the difficult early days. However, with his passion and determination, Mr. Cuong was not discouraged. He spent time visiting and learning from many places, and at the same time experimenting with a variety of different grape varieties on his land. Up to now, Mr. Cuong's vineyard has more than 2,000 vines, with a variety of varieties such as candy grapes, black fingers, red fingers, peony grapes, bayli grapes and traditional grapes.

Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong's family vineyard attracts many visitors.

From 2024, when some grape varieties have produced stable fruit, Mr. Cuong's family decided to open the door to welcome visitors. In the middle of a city familiar with rice and shrimp, the appearance of a cool green vineyard has created a special attraction. Ms. Nguyen Thi Mong Kha (Ly Van Lam commune), one of the first visitors to visit the garden, shared with excitement: "I feel strange, because few people grow grapes here. The soil here is often used to grow fruit trees. I came here to drink water, experience picking, eat grapes and enjoy other very attractive snacks".

Despite his lack of experience in the tourism industry, with his sincerity and openness, Mr. Cuong has received many valuable suggestions from tourists to serve better. On an area of about 1 hectare, his family has planted an apple orchard and some other fruit trees to diversify the products. The canals have also been reinforced, combined with raising frogs and freshwater fish, not only for tourists to visit but also providing fresh ingredients for country cuisine . During the recent April 30 and May 1 holidays, the addition of miniature landscapes has helped the vineyard attract a large number of visitors to experience.

New direction open model

"Generally, Tet is the time when the number of visitors is the highest, the last holiday also had a fair number of visitors but not as many as before. Most visitors were interested in the landscape and space, people also suggested that we should expand and renovate this and that. I also have a direction to visit and learn more in other places so that when I come back, I can develop more systematically," Mr. Cuong shared about his future direction.

The vineyard model has brought Mr. Cuong's family many times more income than growing rice and traditional fruit trees before. Ms. Cao Hong Cam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ly Van Lam Commune, highly appreciated this model: "Mr. Cuong is a very progressive and hard-working farmer. He has researched many places and then successfully planted grapes. Currently, his vineyard is growing very well, the quality of the grapes is not inferior to the types of grapes sold on the market. This is a new model but has seen its effectiveness, the commune is evaluating it to be able to expand it further."

With a nature that is not afraid of difficulties, Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong has turned a bold idea into reality, bringing a new economic model full of potential to Ca Mau. Although still struggling with capital for expansion, this honest farmer still cherishes many new ideas, promising to develop his vineyard further.
