Surgery to remove a kidney stone weighing five times the size of the kidney.

The patient is 62-year-old Canistus Coonge, a retired sergeant. The kidney stone surgery took place on June 1st at the Colombo Military Hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to the New York Post .

Doctors have removed an 801-gram kidney stone from the body of Mr. Canistus Coonghe in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Coonge began experiencing abdominal pain in 2020. Despite taking various medications, his condition persisted. A CT scan of his abdomen revealed a large kidney stone.

Given his condition, Mr. Coonge required surgery. The surgery was performed by Sri Lankan military doctors.

"The surgery to remove the world's largest and heaviest kidney stone from a patient's body was performed on June 1 at Colombo Military Hospital," the Sri Lankan military said in a statement.

The kidney stone was irregularly shaped, with its longest part measuring 13.36 cm and its narrowest part 9.17 cm, weighing 801 grams. The stone's size was comparable to a small grapefruit. This was an unusual kidney stone, weighing more than five times the weight of a kidney.

"The important thing is that the kidney is still functioning normally despite having such a large stone," said surgeon K. Sutharshan. Mr. Coonge revealed to the media that his health is now stable.

The Guinness World Records organization has recognized this as the "largest and heaviest kidney stone" ever removed from a human body surgically. The previous record holder for this kidney stone weighed 620 grams and was removed from a patient in Pakistan in 2008.

Kidney stones form from the deposition of minerals and salts inside the kidneys. This condition causes significant pain, but they usually do not cause serious damage if treated promptly, according to the New York Post .
