Surgery to remove kidney stone 5 times heavier than kidney

The patient is Mr. Canistus Coonge, 62 years old, a retired former sergeant. The kidney stone surgery took place on June 1 at the Colombo Military Hospital in Colombo city (Sri Lanka), according to the New York Post (USA).

Mr. Coonge began experiencing abdominal pain in 2020. Although he took many medications, his condition did not improve. When he had a CT scan of his abdomen, the doctor discovered that he had a large kidney stone in his body.

With this condition, Mr. Coonge was forced to undergo surgery. The surgery was performed by Sri Lankan military doctors.

"The surgery to remove the world's largest and heaviest kidney stone from a patient's body was performed on June 1 at the Colombo Military Hospital," the Sri Lankan military said in a statement.

The kidney stone has an irregular shape, the longest part is 13.36 cm, the narrowest part is 9.17 cm, weighing 801 grams. The size of the stone is equivalent to a small grapefruit. This is an unusual kidney stone because it weighs more than 5 times more than a kidney.

"The important thing is that the kidney is functioning normally despite having such a large stone," said surgeon K. Sutharshan. Mr. Coonge told the media that his health is now stable.

Guinness World Records has recognized it as the "largest and heaviest kidney stone" ever surgically removed from a human body. The previous record holder weighed 620 grams and was removed from a patient in Pakistan in 2008.

Kidney stones are formed from deposits of minerals and salts in the kidneys. This condition is very painful for the sufferer, but they usually do not cause serious damage if treated promptly, according to the New York Post (USA).
