Expanding the scale and quality of mathematics education in Vietnam.

This information was shared at the preliminary review conference of the "National Key Program for the Development of Mathematics in the period 2021 - 2030" organized by the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics on October 22nd.

Associate Professor Dr. Le Minh Ha - Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics, shared this at the conference.

According to Decision No. 2200/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister, the National Key Program for the Development of Mathematics in the period 2021-2030 (the Program) is chaired by the Ministry of Education and Training , with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics as the permanent coordinating unit. During the period 2021-2023, the Program has been implementing meaningful and effective activities that have had a strong impact on the development of mathematics in the country.

Communication and awareness-raising activities on the role of mathematics have been organized in many provinces and cities nationwide, attracting widespread attention and impact. Activities promoting applied mathematics research have been intensified, initially creating a research network in applied statistics, operations research, mathematical modeling in climate change and environment, cryptography and information security, data science , artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain…

The program supported the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program in Mathematics, with a focus on in-depth training in several knowledge areas. The program helped expand the scale and quality of training in the field of mathematical sciences. Previously, most mathematics training programs in Vietnam were mathematics teacher training programs, aiming to train mathematics teachers.

Recently, due to the profound influence of mathematics, especially artificial intelligence and data science, in other fields, many universities have opened new training programs in applied mathematics, statistics, and data science, such as Fulbright University, the International University - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho University, Quy Nhon University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, etc.

Many universities have established Departments of Mathematics/Statistics/Data Science, such as the University of Commerce, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, and the Banking Academy… This indicates the penetration of mathematics into many professions and fields, increasing interest in teaching and research in mathematics.

Affirming the enhanced standing of Vietnamese mathematics, Associate Professor Dr. Le Minh Ha - Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Mathematics - stated that in recent years, Vietnam has become a familiar destination for international scientists. International cooperation activities have been very active, contributing to improving the quality of research and teaching in the country.

In 2025, there will be many major international events such as: the London Mathematical Society meeting; the ICIAM Board Meeting; the Asian Regional Statistics Conference…

In particular, in 2027, Vietnam will host and be selected to organize the International Conference on Mathematical Physics (ICMP). This is a highly prestigious international conference, with a scale of nearly 1,000 people, including many leading mathematicians and physicists from around the world.
