Originally planned for an online release, Moana 2 unexpectedly became a box office hit, becoming the first film to surpass $1 billion in 2025.
The sequel to the animated film grossed $445 million in North America and $567 million internationally, bringing its total global revenue to $1.009 billion after eight weeks of release. "Moana 2" is Disney's third theatrical release in 2024 to join the billion-dollar club, following "Inside Out 2" and "Deadpool & Wolverine". Notably, no other studio has reached this milestone (the closest film to $1 billion was Universal's "Despicable Me 4" with $969 million), thus solidifying Disney's dominant position in a year marking a strong recovery.
“Moana 2” premiered on November 28th and became a Thanksgiving box office sensation, grossing $225 million, surpassing the previous record set by “Frozen II” in 2019 with $125 million. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film benefited from word-of-mouth and remained in the Top 5 of the North American box office for seven consecutive weeks.
The success of "Moana 2" was unexpected because the film had previously been planned for release on the Disney+ streaming platform. The first film, "Moana," despite receiving many positive reviews, only grossed $680 million worldwide in 2016. It then exploded in popularity on Disney+, becoming one of the most-watched streaming titles.
Disney is also developing a live-action version of Moana, scheduled for release in 2026. And with the film's very positive box office performance, a third animated film might not be too far-fetched.
