Medical news update October 29th: A brain-dead donor saves four lives by donating organs.

According to information from Bach Mai Hospital, a recent case of a brain-dead patient has resulted in the family agreeing to allow the medical sector to use donated organs to save the lives of four other patients.

A brain-dead donor saves four lives by donating organs.

On the evening of October 16th, patient Le Tien S. (male, born in 1988, from Ha Nam province) experienced severe headaches and numbness in his limbs, prompting his family to take him to the emergency room. En route, he lost consciousness, fell into a coma, experienced convulsions, and suffered respiratory and cardiac arrest.

Organ donation: Giving is forever.

Upon arrival at the A9 Emergency Center, Bach Mai Hospital, the patient was in a coma and experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Despite intensive cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the restoration of spontaneous circulation, the patient remained in a deep coma.

Mr. S. was then transferred to the Stroke Center and underwent MSCT cerebral angiography. After consultation, he was diagnosed with coma and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to severe diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage (Hunt Hess V), suspected to be caused by a ruptured cerebral arteriovenous malformation.

The multidisciplinary consultation board decided to perform digital subtraction angiography to find the cause of the bleeding, which revealed a ruptured right vertebral artery aneurysm. The patient underwent emergency coil embolization of the aneurysm.

Following the intervention, the patient remained in a deep coma, with a persistent high fever, and did not respond to treatment, despite resuscitation, treatment of cerebral edema, electrolyte control, and aggressive temperature management.

Following the intervention, the patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment with a diagnosis of coma after cardiac arrest, cerebral hemorrhage due to ruptured right vertebral artery aneurysm, and pneumonia.

Over the next nine days, despite intensive treatment and resuscitation efforts, the patient's condition did not improve; they fell into a deeper coma, lost reflexes, and were at risk of brain death.

Following numerous hospital-wide consultations, and recognizing the patient's high risk of brain death, the hospital explained the patient's prognosis and discussed with the family the noble significance of the national organ and tissue donation program.

And the purpose of bringing life to patients who are battling illness day and night, and the noble humanitarian meaning of saving lives – "giving is forever" – convinced the family of patient S.

Having witnessed firsthand the 10 days of dedication from doctors, nurses, and medical staff to Mr. S., the patient's family understood and expressed their wish to donate his organs to save lives and give hope to others.

This is an invaluable sacrifice demonstrating compassion, capable of bringing miracles to patients suffering from pain and despair.

After completing the legal procedures under the guidance and support of the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, Military Central Hospital 108, Bach Mai Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, etc., coordinated to perform organ harvesting surgery from patients for transfer to recipients.

According to the plan, within just 4 hours and 30 minutes of being retrieved from the donor's cage, the heart was transported to Hue Central Hospital for a heart failure patient; the liver to Military Central Hospital 108 for a liver failure patient; and the two kidneys were immediately transplanted at Bach Mai Hospital by doctors from Military Central Hospital 108 for two patients with end-stage renal failure.

The life-saving journey at Bach Mai Hospital has been challenging yet has achieved the desired results. Life has been extended, and the noble values have deeply moved and touched everyone. These noble acts will surely spread and connect in the fight for human life and public health.

Medical news update June 1st: A remarkable heart transplant achievement at Military Central Hospital 108.Inspired by the noble act of organ donation from a brain-dead individual following a traffic accident, doctors at Military Central Hospital 108 successfully performed a multi-organ transplant, saving the lives of many critically ill patients.

The Department of Environmental Health Management (Ministry of Health), in collaboration with the School of Public Health, recently organized the 4th National Scientific Conference on Injury Prevention and Control with the theme: “Reducing the Burden of Injury: The Effectiveness of Sustainable Policies and Interventions”.

In his speech at the conference, Deputy Minister of Health Le Duc Luan stated that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), injuries account for up to 11% of the global disease burden, with 80% of these occurring in developing countries.

Each year, 4.4 million people die (accounting for nearly 8% of all deaths) and 78 million people are permanently disabled due to injuries. Road traffic accidents, drowning, falls, and violence are the main causes.

In Vietnam, according to Deputy Minister Le Duc Luan, injuries account for over 11% of all diseases. The Ministry of Health reports that between 2019 and 2023, more than 30,000 people died each year due to injuries, representing 7% of all deaths. This translates to approximately 80 deaths per day due to injuries. Traffic accidents, drowning, and workplace accidents are among the leading causes.

According to the Deputy Minister of Health, despite many efforts in preventing injuries, this remains a worrying issue.

Statistics from healthcare facilities show that, on average, more than 1.1 million cases of injuries are examined and treated at healthcare facilities each year, and more than 30,000 people die as a result of injuries.

Road traffic accidents, drowning, and workplace accidents are the leading causes of death due to injuries. This shows that, despite achieving some results, Vietnam needs to continue its efforts and invest more to minimize injuries and reduce their consequences.

According to Deputy Minister Le Duc Luan, Vietnam has been implementing activities and policies aimed at minimizing injuries.

According to statistics, from 2012 to the present, the death rate from injuries per 100,000 people has decreased by approximately 28%. Nearly 500 communes/wards have been recognized as safe communities – for injury prevention.

"Nevertheless, the number of deaths remains high, and there are still many potential risks of accidents and injuries due to climate change, natural disasters, catastrophes… even traffic accidents and workplace accidents still pose many risks," Deputy Minister Le Duc Luan said.
