The clash is still long, but Robin van Persie's Feyenoord won the first leg against Fenerbahce in the third qualifying round of the 2025/26 Champions League .

Thanks to the home advantage at De Kuip, the Dutch football representative overcame Jose Mourinho 's Fenerbahce in a tense match.

Van Persie took a risk by starting Ahmedhodzic just one day after the defender arrived in Rotterdam.

Conversely, Mourinho left Jhon Duran – a loan signing from Al Nassr – on the bench.

Mourinho was in a bad mood before the match. During the press conference, the "Special One" almost broke down when mentioning Jorge Costa.

The former Porto player – who Mourinho led to the 2004 Champions League victory – died of a heart attack on August 5th.

In the 19th minute, the home team repeatedly bombarded the opponent's penalty area, creating chaos. Quinten Timber unleashed a shot that deflected off Muldur, changing direction and flying into the net.

Steijn, Feyenoord's star signing this summer, nearly extended the lead with a free-kick that went just wide of the top corner.

Before halftime, Kahveci scored against Feyenoord, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The referees' decision seemed correct, but as usual, it still sent Mourinho into a rage on the touchline.

The second half saw a resurgence from the Turkish representatives, who created several dangerous situations.

In the 86th minute, Fenerbahce equalized. Following an attacking move from their own half, Ahmedhodzic made a mistake in clearing the ball, allowing Amrabat to unleash a powerful shot that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.

Time was running out. Feyenoord had no choice but to cross the ball into the penalty area.

Just when the audience thought the match would end in a draw, the situation changed. Hadj Moussa, small but skillful, appeared at the right moment to head the ball into the far post, securing the winning goal in the first minute of added time.

Fenerbahce no longer have a chance to retaliate. Van Persie dominated the first leg, and Mourinho has a lot of work to do in the second leg.

If Mourinho fails to make a difference in next week's return match at home, Fenerbahce will extend their Champions League drought: 17 years without reaching the group stage.
