Mourinho hints at a return to Real Madrid. |
"I'm not stupid. There have been contacts between Real Madrid and Jorge Mendes," Jose Mourinho said after Benfica's victory over Estoril in the final round of the Portuguese league.
The Portuguese strategist is becoming a leading candidate for the hot seat at Real Madrid amidst uncertainty surrounding coach Alvaro Arbeloa's future. However, Mourinho insists he has not received any official offer from the Spanish royal club.
“Right now, the only thing I have on the table is the contract extension offer from Benfica. I haven’t spoken to Florentino Perez or anyone in the Real Madrid board. But obviously, nobody is a fool,” he said.
Mourinho said he wanted more time to think before making a final decision. “Tomorrow I will still wake up as the Benfica manager. On Monday I will still go to the training center as usual. Then we’ll see what happens,” the 63-year-old coach shared.
When asked if he could turn down Real Madrid, Mourinho replied quite frankly: “That depends on what they expect of me. It’s not a matter of money, but about the job orientation and the club’s requirements.”
In the final round of the season, Benfica easily defeated Estoril but still failed to secure a Champions League spot as Sporting CP also completed their task. Mourinho's team finished the season unbeaten in the domestic league but only in third place.
After the match, Mourinho had high praise for his players. He asserted that the current position did not accurately reflect the effort the team had shown throughout the season.
"I am extremely proud of this dressing room. They are a highly disciplined, united team that always fights to the very end," Mourinho emphasized.
The future of "The Special One" is expected to be decided next week, at which point contacts with Real Madrid could move into a more direct phase.
