On the afternoon of January 12th, after 10 days of trial, the Hanoi People's Court announced its verdict against 38 defendants in the case involving Viet A Technology Joint Stock Company (Viet A Company), the Ministry of Health , the Ministry of Science and Technology, and several localities.
According to the judging panel, during the sentencing process, the court carefully considered the "merits" and "crimes" of each defendant. Those who acted against the interests of the people would be severely punished; those who played a minor role, acted on orders, or did not benefit from the crime would be shown leniency.
In light of this, among the 38 defendants, Phan Quoc Viet, General Director of Viet A Company, was the only one sentenced within the prosecution's penalty range: 29 years in prison for two crimes: bribery and violating bidding regulations causing serious consequences.
The other 36 defendants, including six former officials prosecuted for bribery, were all sentenced below the maximum penalty.
Notably, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Danh, the former Director of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of Binh Duong province, was acquitted of criminal responsibility. The court determined that, despite his wrongdoings, Mr. Danh acted without self-interest, demonstrating courage and a willingness to act for the sake of public health.
