After more than 70 days fishing in the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands, fisherman Pham Tieng's squid fishing boat docked at Tam Quang fishing port in Da Nang city to sell its catch. On this trip, Mr. Tieng and his 50 crew members caught approximately 30 tons of commercial squid. With a selling price of 317,000 VND per kilogram, the total revenue reached over 9 billion VND. Having been involved in offshore squid fishing for many years, Mr. Tieng said that the price of squid has never been as high as it is now.
These days, many squid fishing boats from the two communes of Binh Son and Van Tuong are continuously returning to port to sell their catch. Most boats have earned approximately ten billion dong. The first fishing trip of the year benefited from favorable weather and abundant squid schools, resulting in a significant increase in productivity. The price of squid has doubled compared to the same period last year, further motivating fishermen to confidently venture out to sea and stay for extended periods in distant waters.
Currently, Binh Son and Van Tuong communes have about 90 vessels specializing in squid fishing, employing over 4,000 laborers regularly at sea. Each fishing trip lasts from two to three months, with a total annual catch of approximately 8,000 tons. In recent years, squid products have been purchased and exported to many markets, thus increasing their value. Successful fishing trips not only provide a stable income for fishermen but also instill confidence in them to persevere in fishing.
