Colorful international beauty contest

International beauty contests are held annually to find beauties who represent the voice of modern women.

The first international beauty pageant was the International Pageant of Pulchritude, organized by the C.E. Barfield Company of Galveston, Texas. It began in 1926 and served as a model for later beauty pageants.

After World War II, the popularity of the Miss America pageant, which was first held in 1921, prompted other organizations to create similar pageants. Miss World was initiated in 1951, Miss Universe and its rival Miss USA were established in 1952. Miss International was established in 1960, and Miss Earth was first held in 2001 to raise awareness about environmental protection.

Currently, the six largest and most prestigious beauty pageants in the world are Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Earth, Miss Grand International and Miss Supranational .

Miss World

The world's largest international beauty pageant, recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-running and largest, Miss World was first organised by TV presenter Eric Morley in 1951, initially to promote a new swimsuit model. The MWO (Miss World Organisation) owns and organises the event each year, raising over £1 billion for charities for disabled children.

The Miss World pageant emphasizes the message of “Beauty for a Cause”, highly valuing the contestants’ intelligence, personality and communication skills. To win, contestants need outstanding beauty, intelligence, compassion and communication skills. After being crowned, the beauty queen will participate in many global charity activities.

Miss Universe

The second largest international beauty pageant in the world, it is noted for its glamour and fierce competition. It was started in 1952 by the California-based Pacific Mills Fashion Company and is now administered by the Miss Universe Organization.

Countries that have performed well at Miss Universe include the United States, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Contestants compete in swimsuits, evening gowns, national costumes, interviews, fashion shows and social events. What makes this pageant unique is that there is no talent competition.

Miss International

The contest was first held in Long Beach, California (USA) in 1960, then moved to Japan from 1968 to 1970. In 1971 and 1972, the contest returned to Long Beach and was then held annually in Japan.

Contestants are judged not only on their beauty but also on their compassion, friendship, elegance, intelligence, initiative and sensitivity to global issues. The main goal of the pageant is to promote world peace, goodwill and mutual understanding.

Recently, Vietnam's representative Huynh Thi Thanh Thuy surpassed 70 contestants and won the Miss International 2024 crown. She is also the first Vietnamese beauty to be crowned at this contest.

Miss Earth

As the fourth largest beauty pageant in the world, attracting participation from about 80 countries, the contest was first organized by the Philippines' Carousel Productions Corporation in 2001.

Miss Earth is not only judged on beauty but also on the knowledge, responsibility and skills of the contestants, with the aim of raising awareness and action for environmental protection. Contestants will go through traditional competitions such as swimsuit, evening gown, traditional costume, personal interview and talent competition. The special feature of Miss Earth is that contestants are required to prepare a specific environmental project for their country, similar to the charity project in Miss World and participate in environmental protection activities.

Nguyen Phuong Khanh is the first Vietnamese beauty to win the Miss Earth 2018 crown - one of the four biggest beauty contests on the planet.

Miss Grand International

It is a major international beauty pageant, held in Bangkok, Thailand, with the main goal of spreading the message of “Ending War and Violence”. The winner is responsible for making trips to promote solidarity and peace, as well as promoting human rights around the world. The pageant was first held in 2013 in Thailand with the participation of 71 contestants and quickly gained prestige with its large scale organization. From 2013 to 2015, the pageant was held in Thailand, then the United States, Vietnam, Myanmar, Venezuela and Indonesia.

Miss Grand International seeks women who are not only beautiful but also talented and compassionate to spread the message of peace. The winner will participate in charity and promotional activities for the pageant.

Surpassing 69 beauties representing countries and territories around the world, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien was crowned Miss Grand International 2021.

Miss Supranational

First held in 2009 in Poland, Miss Supranational is run by the World Beauty Association (WBA), headquartered in Panama, and is among the six largest beauty pageants on the planet.

Vietnam started sending representatives to participate in this beauty pageant in 2009 and has achieved many outstanding achievements: Daniela Nguyen Thu May - 3rd Runner-up in 2011, Nguyen Huynh Kim Duyen - 2nd Runner-up in 2022, Dang Thanh Ngan - 4th Runner-up in 2023.

In addition to the six prestigious beauty pageants in the world, there is also Miss Intercontinental, which was first held in 1971 in Aruba to promote global tourism. Vietnam sent a representative to participate in this contest for the first time in 2003 and in 2015, Vietnam entered the top 17 for the first time with the participation of Le Thi Ha Thu.

Three years later, Le Au Ngan Anh, Miss Ocean Vietnam 2017, won the 4th runner-up position. In 2022, Le Nguyen Bao Ngoc from Vietnam was crowned Miss Intercontinental in Egypt.

The success of Vietnamese beauty in the international arena in recent years is the result of efforts, investment and methodical strategies, affirming that Vietnam is fully capable of competing in major arenas.
